Perspective

The document discusses the basic elements of perspective drawing including the horizon line, vanishing points, and vanishing lines. It explains one-point, two-point, and three-point perspective and how they use these elements to create the illusion of depth and distance on a 2D surface.

LESSON # 2

PERSPECTIVE DRAWING
Plan Perspectives
A plan perspective is a drawing of a plan but
shown in perspective. This is more of a design
drawing meant to show what the space is
going to look like and less how the space will
be built.
Perspective Drawing
Perspective drawing is a technique to create
the linear illusion of depth. As objects get
further away from the viewer they appear to
decrease in size at a constant rate. The box in
the sketch below appears solid and three
dimensional due to the use of perspective.
The basic elements of
perspective drawing

In order to understand human

perception, there are three important
tools for perspective drawing:
The horizon line, vanishing points,
and vanishing lines.
HORIZON is the line for which the sky
meets the land or water below. The height
of the horizon will affect the placement of
the vanishing point(s) as well as the scene’s
eye level.
VANISHING POINT
is the place where parallel lines appear to come
together in the distance. In the picture, below,
you can see how the parallel lines of the road
recede and visually merge to create a single
vanishing point on the horizon. A scene can have
a limitless number of vanishing points.
VANISHING LINES
Straight diagonal lines
drawn to connect points
around the edges of a
picture to the vanishing
point. They represent
parallel lines receding into
the distance to help draw
the viewer's eye into the
depth of the picture
THREE (3) types
of perspective
drawing:
One-point
perspective,
Two-point
perspective, and
Three-point
perspective.
ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE

a drawing method that shows how

things appear to get smaller as they

get further away, converging
towards a single 'vanishing point' on
the horizon line.
TWO POINT PERSPECTIVE

A technique in art involving two lines

diverging into two separate vanishing

points.
THREE POINT PERSPECTIVE

Uses three sets of orthogonal lines and

three vanishing points to draw an

object.
