A computer System includes
____________ and _____________
components to make the computer
function efficiently.

Software is a set of instructions (called a
program) that governs the operation of a
computer System. It tells the computer
what to do, when to do it and how to do it.

Hardware is the physical parts of the

computer that can be touched.

What are input devices
and give examples?
Input Devices
Input devices are pieces of equipment that are used
to enter data into the computer.

Examples
What comes to mind
when you think about
data entry?
Data Entry
Data entry is the entering of data into a computer using input
devices, such as a keyboard, mouse and scanner.

Types of Data Entry Devices

 Manual Data Entry Devices

 Source/Automated Data Entry Devices
MANUAL DATA ENTRY DEVICES
Manual input devices are those devices of a computer system
that allow users to directly interact with that computer and its
systems. These range from video capture devices and
cameras to a simple mouse and keyboard.
SOURCE/AUTOMATED DATA
ENTRY DEVICES

Automatic or Automated input devices are those devices

used for capturing and entering data directly without any
need for human interactions. It is sometimes called Direct
Data Entry(DDE) and is used when very large amount of
Data need to be input quickly and accurately.

SOURCE/AUTOMATED DATA
ENTRY DEVICES
1. Scanner
This is an electronic imaging device that use light-sensing
equipment to translate images of text, drawings, and photos
into digital form to computer.

ENTRY DEVICES
2. Bar-code Readers
This is an electronic device for reading printed barcodes usually on a
product to know their price.
3. The optical mark recognition (OMR)
This device uses a special scanner that can reads bubble or pencil marks.
This optical mark recognition (OMR) are generally use in education
where it use to evaluate standardized test.

4. MICR - magnetic-ink character reader
Magnetic Ink Card Reader (MICR) is generally used in banks because of
a large number of cheques to be processed everyday. The bank's code
number and cheque number are printed on the cheques with a special
type of ink that contains particles of magnetic material that are machine
readable.
MANUAL DATA ENTRY DEVICES
1. Keyboard
A computer keyboard is an input device that allows a person to enter
letters, numbers, and other symbols into a computer. It is one of the
most used input devices for computers.

2. Mouse
A mouse is an input device that allows you to control the coordinates
and movement of the onscreen cursor/pointer by simply moving the
mouse across a flat surface with your hand
MANUAL DATA ENTRY DEVICES
3. Trackball
A trackball is an input device used to enter motion data into
computers or other electronic devices. It serves the same purpose as
a mouse but is designed with a moveable ball on the top, which can
be rolled in any direction.

4. Joystick
A joystick is an input device that can be used for controlling the
movement of the cursor or a pointer in a computer device. The
pointer/cursor movement is controlled by maneuvering a lever on the
joystick. The input device is mostly used for gaming applications
and, sometimes, in graphics applications.
MANUAL DATA ENTRY DEVICES
5. The digital camera
Digital Cameras capture images by using a light-sensitive processor chip to
capture photographic images in digital form and store them on a small disk (SD
card or microSD card) in the camera or on flash memory cards.

6. Touchscreen
Touchscreen is a display that serves as an input device. Some touchscreens
require a proprietary pen for input, though most modern touchscreens detect
human touch. Since touchscreen devices accept input directly through the screen,
they do not require external input devices, such as mouse and keyboards.
Output Devices
An output device is a piece of computer hardware that
receives data from a computer and then translates that data
into another form. That form may be audio, visual, textual, or
hard copy such as a printed document.

Output devices are used to get information or any other

response out of a computer.
