History

Founder: Eunice Kennedy Shriver

(July 10, 1921 – August 11, 2009)
History
In June 1963, Eunice Kennedy
Shriver started a day camp called
Camp Shriver for children with
intellectual and physical disabilities
at her home in Potomac, Maryland.
The camp sought to address the
concern that disabled children had
very little opportunity to participate
in organised athletic events.
History
Through this camp, she drew public
attention to children with intellectual
disabilities and proved that these
children were not "difficult,"
"unteachable," "belligerent" and all
those other stereotypes that had been
ascribed to them. They merely wanted
to have fun ... just like every other kid.
