Multiplication of Polynomials

(1) The document describes a multiplication race activity where students are given pairs of numbers and must quickly find the product. It asks what strategy students use and discusses the advantage of knowing the multiplication table. (2) Laws for exponent multiplication are explained, including same bases, power to a power, and two bases with an exponent. Examples are given. (3) Multiplying monomials and binomials are discussed. The FOIL and distributive property methods are explained with examples. An assignment with additional practice problems is provided.

RECALL!

Activity: Multiplication Race

• Direction: I will give two numbers then you will find its
products as fast as you can. Then it's up to you what method
or strategy you use.

CONGRATULATIONS!
What is your strategy to get the product as
fast as possible?

What do you think is the advantage or the

help if we familiarize the multiplication

Laws of Exponent for Multiplication

a. Product of Same Bases

b. Power to a Power
c. Two bases and an exponent
a. Product of Same Bases
In multiplying the same base, add the exponents.
)=

Example: (x2) (x3) = x5

b. Power to a Power
• If an exponent is raised by another exponent, multiply the
exponents and copy the base.
(am)n = amn
• Example:
• (x2) 3 = x2 (3)
• = (x2)3 = x6
Product to a Power
• Two bases and an exponent. If an exponent is raised to two
bases, raise the two bases with the exponent.
Example:
(ab)2 = (a) 2 (b) 2
(ab) 2= a2b2
(4x2y)3=64x6y3
Multiplying monomials
• Monomial is only one term, like y
• In multiplying monomials is if the base or variables of the
monomials are similar , then we can directly add the
exponent.
• Example 1

()()

= y5
Example 2

(a)(bc)
= c

Remember that we can only add the exponent

that have the same base.
Example 3
(− 5)(4)

• First thing that we must do is multiply the constant

which is (4) (-5).
• Then add the exponent with same variable or base
which is y raised to 2+3
• So our final answer is − 20.
Multiplying Binomial
There are two method in multiplying binomial. The first is the Foil
method, then the second is the distributive method.
FOIL MEANS
F - first term
O - outer term
I - inner term
L - last term
Example 1: (2x − 4)(3x + 5)
• F- (first term) = (2x)(3x) = 6x2
• O- (outer term)= (2x)(5) = 10x
• I- (inner term) = (-4)(3x) = -12x
• L- (last term)= (-4)(5) = -20
= 6x2+10x-12x-20
= 6x2-2x-20
Distributive property method
Example: (2x -4 ) ( 3x + 5)
(2x -4 ) ( 3x + 5)
= 2x(3x+5)-4(3x+5)
= 6+ 10x – 12x – 20
= 6− 2x – 20
Example 2: (x+2)(x + 6)
• F- (first term) = (x)(x) = x2
• O- (outer term)= (x)(6) = 6x
• I- (inner term) = (2)(x) = 2x
• L- (last term)= (2)(6) = 12
= x2+6x+2x+12
= x2+2x+12
Distributive property method
Example: (x +2 ) ( x + 6)
= (x) (x+2)+ (2) (x+6)
= +2x + 2x + 12
= x +12
Assignment
1.Give the product of (2) (b + 3).
2. What is the result if (-4a2) is multiplied to (-2a +3)?
3. Determine the product of (-3m) (m 2 – 2m + 3).
4. Find the product of (x + 2) (x - 1) using FOIL method.

5. Find the product of (5x2-3) (4x2+ 2) using FOIL method.
