Division of Polynomials

This document provides examples and steps for dividing polynomials. It explains how to divide monomials by subtracting exponents, and how to divide polynomials using both the long division and synthetic division methods. Examples are given for dividing polynomials by monomials, binomials, and finding quotients. Key steps involve arranging terms in descending order and repeatedly dividing and subtracting terms until a quotient is reached.

ASSIGNMENT:

1: Give the product of (2) (b + 3).

2. What is the result if (-4a2) is multiplied to (-2a +3)?
3. Determine the product of (-3m) (m2 – 2m + 3).
4. Find the product of (x + 2) (x - 1) using FOIL method.
5. Find the product of (a – 2) (a + 5) using FOIL method
ANSWERS:
1. 2 (b + 3) 3. -3m (m2 – 2m + 3)
= 2 (b) + 2 (3) = -3m () + (-3m) (-2m) + (-3m) (3)
= 2b + 6 = -3 + 6 – 9m

2. (-4) (-2a + 3) 4. (x + 2) (x – 1)
= -4 (-2a) + (-4) (3) -x +2x – 2
= 8 – 12 +x–2
5. (a – 2) (a + 5)
= a2 + 5a – 2a – 10
= + 3a – 10
MULTIPLYING BINOMIAL TO TRINOMIAL

=(3x) (4x2-6x+7) + (-2)(4x2-6x+7)
= 12x3-18x2+21x-8x2+12x-14
= 12x3-26x2+33x-14

Laws of Exponent for Division
1. Dividing powers with same base
2. Definition of a negative exponent
3. Raising a quotient to a power
Dividing powers with same base
When dividing like base, keep the base the same and subtract
the denominator exponent from the numerator exponent

= x4
Definition of a negative exponent
For any nonzero real number a and any integer n

Dividing a Polynomial by a Monomial

• In dividing a polynomial by a monomial, we apply this property of

fraction.

Steps in Dividing a Polynomial by a Monomial

1.Arrange the powers of a certain variable in descending order.

2. Divide each term of the polynomial by the monomial.
3. Add the resulting quotients.

= 3y-2

Example 2:

= 3x2-2x+4
Steps in Dividing a Polynomial by a Binomial

1. Arrange the polynomial in descending order.

2. Divide the term with the highest power in the dividend by the term
with the highest power in the divisor.
3. Multiply the first term of the quotient by the binomial and subtract
the result from the first two term of the polynomial. Bring down the
next term.
4. If the degree of the first term of the remainder is less than the degree
of the first term of the binomial divisor, STOP. If not, repeat the step 2
and continue the process.
Dividing a Polynomial by a Binomial using LONG DIVISION METHOD

EXAMPLE 1: Divide y2-3y-10 by y+2

y-5
y+2
- y2+2y + -y2-2y
-5y-10
+ 5y+10
0
SYNTHETIC DIVISION METHOD

EXAMPLE 1: Divide y2-3y-10 by y+2

y+2 = 0 -2 1 -3 -10
y = -2 + -2 10

1 -5 0
Therefore, the quotient is y-5.

Therefore, the quotient is x-2.

SYNTHETIC DIVISION METHOD

EXAMPLE 2: Divide (x2-7x+10) by ( x-5)

x-5 = 0
x=5 5 1 -7 10
+ 5 -10
