Bed Making

Bed Making
 One of the fundamental techniques employed
by nurses, it implies that the bed linen are
changed or tightened.
 An actively commonly performed by the
nurse in conjunction with nursing
observation, assessment of the of the client’s
motility or skin condition.
Types of Bed Making
 Unoccupied bed
 Occupied Bed
 Surgical / Anesthesia Bed
Infection Control on Bed Making

1. Microorganism move through space on air currents,

therefore handle linen carefully. Avoid shaking it or
tossing it into the laundry hamper. Avoid throwing linen
on the floor.
2. Microorganism are transferred from one surface to
another whenever one object touches another, therefore
hold both soiled and clean linen away from your uniform.
3. Perform handwashing to remove many of the
microorganism that would be transferred by the hands
from one item to another.
Guidelines for Bed Making
1. Use good body alignment, a wide base of support and a
proper working height when making the bed. Face
toward the direction of movement and bend knees, not
the back.
2. Complete the linen change on one side before moving
to another side to save time and conserve energy.
3. Avoid contaminating clean linen. Once linen enter a unit,
they are exposed to that patient’s microorganism and
must not be returned to the clean supply or used
elsewhere.
4. Unfold linens unto the bed. Do not flip or fan linens to
avoid stirring up air currents. Microorganism travel on air
currents and could be carried out of the unit.
Guidelines for Bed Making
5. Remove linens one piece at a time. To avoid
wrapping dentures, eyeglasses, religious objects, or
other patient’s belonging in soiled linens.
6. Do not place soiled or used linen from one patient
on the bed, table or chairs belonging to another
patient.
7. Carry used or soiled linens away from the body,
and place them in closed linen hampers or bags.
 Use a pillow case if a linen bag is not available and
transport it to the linen hamper.
 DO NOT PLACE SOILED LINENS ON THE FLOOR.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS

1. Assemble all necessary articles before bed

making. Arrange linens according to its use –
from the top: bottom sheet, rubber sheet,
draw sheet, top sheet, pillow case, and
pillow.

2. Place protective sheet according to patient’s

condition and preference.
Purposes of Bed making

 To promote client’s comfort.

 To provide a clean and neat environment.

 To provide a smooth, wrinkle-free bed

foundation, thus minimizing sources of skin
irritation.
Assessment
 Assess the client’s health status to determine that
the person can safely get out of bed.

 Assess the client’s pulse and respirations if

indicated.

 Note all the tubes and equipment connected to the

client because this may influence the need for
additional linens or waterproof pads.
Planning

1. Assemble all the equipment and supplies.

 bottom sheet

 protective sheet or rubber sheet

 draw sheet

 top sheet

 pillow case

 pillow
Implementation
1. Explain to the client what you are going to do, why it
is necessary, and how he or she can cooperate.
2. Wash hands and observe other infection control
procedures.
3. Provide for client privacy.
4. Place the fresh linen on the client’s chair or over
bed table; do not use another client’s bed.
 Rationale: This prevents cross contamination (the

movement of microorganism from one client to

another) via soiled linen.
Implementation
5. Assess and assist client out of bed. Make sure this
is an appropriate and convenient time for the client
to be out of bed. Assist in a comfortable chair.
6. Strip the bed.
 Check bed linens for any items belonging to the client, and
detach the call bell or any drainage tubes from the bed
linen.
 Loosen all bedding systematically, starting at the head of
the bed on the far side and moving around the bed up to
the head of the bed on the near side.
 Rationale: Moving around the bed systematically prevents
stretching and reaching and possible muscle strain.
 Remove the pillowcases, if soiled and place the pillows on
the bedside chair near the foot of the bed.
Implementation
 Fold reusable linens, such as the top sheet on the bed,
into fourths. First, fold the linen in half by bringing the
top edge even with the bottom edge, and then grasp it
at the center of the middle fold and bottom edges.
 Rationale: Folding linens saves time and energy when
reapplying the linens on the bed.
 Remove the waterproof pad and discard if soiled.
 Roll all soiled linen inside the bottom sheet, hold it
away from your uniform, and place it directly in the
linen hamper.
 Rationale: These actions are essential to prevent the
transmission of microorganisms to the nurse and others.
 Grasp the mattress securely, using the lugs if present,
and move the mattress up to the head of the bed.
Implementation
7. Apply the bottom sheet and draw sheet.
 Place the bottom sheet with the centerfold on the center of the bed,
make sure the sheet is hem-side down for a smooth foundation.
Spread the sheet out over the mattress and allow sufficient amount
of sheet at the top to tuck under mattress.
 Mitered at the corner.
 Pick up the side edge of the sheet approximately 12 inches from

the corner of the mattress. Hold it straight up and down, parallel

to the side of the mattress.
 Lay the upper part of the sheet on the bed.

 Tuck the part of the sheet that is hanging below the mattress

smoothly under the mattress.

 Holding the sheet in place against the mattress with one hand,

use your other hand to lift the folded part of the sheet lying on the
bed and bring it down. Tuck it under the mattress all the way to
the foot of the bed.
Implementation
 Place the rubber sheet or protective sheet over the middle part of the
bed with the centerfold at the center.
 Fanfold the uppermost half of the folded draw sheet at the center or

far edge of the bed.

 Place the cloth draw sheet in the same manner with the rubber

sheet.
 Tuck in the near edge.

Optional: Before moving to the other side of the bed, place the top
linen on the bed hem-side up, unfold , and tuck on the foot side and
miter the corner.
8. Move to the other side and secure the bottom linens.
 Tuck in the bottom sheet under the head of the mattress, pull the
sheet firmly, and miter the corner of the sheet.
 Pull the remainder of the sheet firmly so that there are no wrinkles.
 Complete this same process for the protective sheet and cloth draw
sheet.
Implementation
9. Apply or complete the top sheet, blanket, and spread.
 Place the top sheet, hem-side up, on the bed so that its centerfold is
at the center of the bed and the top edge is even with the top edge
or head of the bed.
 Unfold the sheet and fanfold the uppermost half of the folded top
sheet, tuck the remainder of the sheet on the foot part. Miter the
corner.
Optional: Make a vertical or a horizontal toe pleat in the sheet to
provide additional room for the client’s feet.
 Leave the sides of the top sheet hanging freely, unless toe pleats
were provided.
 Fold the top of the sheet down over the spread, providing a cuff.
 Move to the other side of the bed, and secure the top bedding in the
same manner.
Implementation
10. Put clean pillowcases on the pillows as required.
 Grasp the closed end of the pillowcase at the center
with one hand.
 Gather up sides of the pillowcase, and place them over
the hand grasping the case. Then grasp the center of
one short side of he pillow through the pillowcase.
 With the free hand, pull the pillowcase over the pillow.
 Adjust the pillowcase so that the pillow fits into the
corners of the case and the seams are straight.
 Place the pillows appropriately at the head of the bed.
11. Provide for client comfort and safety.
12. Document and report pertinent data.
Surgical Bed/ Anesthesia Bed
 A type of bed that is prepared to receive a
patient who has undergone an operation
under general anesthesia.

 Purposes:
 To provide a clean bed environment, to reduce
the potential risk of infection post-operatively.
 To provide a bed that will facilitate the transfer of
patient from stretcher to bed.
 Provide a secure bed, provide warmth and
comfort thus maintaining body heat.
Surgical Bed/ Anesthesia Bed
 Important Considerations
1. Assemble all equipments needed for post-op care before
patient’s arrive.
2. Place protective sheet according to patient’s need.

 Equipments
 All linens needed for close bed
 Hot water bag
 Bath towel
 Kidney basin
 Tissue paper
 BP apparatus
