Unit 1: Chemistry

Matter, Acids and Bases, Properties and Changes of Matter
Unit Essential Question:

What are the properties of matter and how is matter classified?
Matter

7.P.2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the
structure and properties of matter and that matter is conserved as
it undergoes changes.
Lesson Essential Questions:

What is matter?

How can you tell whether something is

a pure substance or a mixture?
Vocabulary

 Atom  Matter
 Subatomic Particles  Element
 Nucleus  Compound
 Protons  Mixture
 Neutrons  Heterogeneous Mixture
 Electrons  Homogeneous Mixture
 Atomic Model
Atom

 The smallest part of an element that has the chemical
properties of that element.

 A single atom has mass and takes up space.

Subatomic Particles

 All atoms are composed of subatomic particles:
 Protons
 Neutrons
 Electrons
 The number of each, affects the properties of an
atom.
Nucleus

 The nucleus is located in the center of the atom with
the electrons moving in random patterns in the space
around the nucleus.
 It is composed of Protons & Neutrons.
Protons & Neutrons

 Subatomic Particles
 Have the same mass (weight)
 Protons are positively charged
 Neutrons are neutral
 They are tightly bond together - forming the nucleus
Electrons

 Electrons have a negative charge
 They move in a random pattern around the nucleus.
Atomic Model

 These are examples of atomic models:
Matter

 Anything that has mass and takes up space
 Composed of extremely small particles called atoms.
They are too small to be seen with a classroom
microscope.
Phases of Matter

Solid

Liquid

Gas
Matter is classified on the basis
of its composition.

Heterogeneous Homogeneous Elements Compounds

Mixtures Mixtures
Matter occurs in mixtures and pure substances

 Mixtures: Heterogeneous  Pure substances:
& Homogeneous Elements & compounds
Element

Pure substances (constant composition) that
cannot be changed into simpler substances.

Elements are
composed of
one kind of atom.

 Examples: Hydrogen,
Oxygen, Carbon
Compound

Another name: Molecule
Pure substances that are composed of 2 or more
elements that are chemically combined
Compounds can only be changed into simpler
substances called elements by chemical changes
One way that two or more atoms can combine is to
form a molecule.
 Ex. CO2, H2O, H2O2, NaCl
Mixture

Made of two or more different substances that
retain their own individual properties and are
combined physically (mixed together)
Mixtures can be filtered by physical means
(filtration, sifting, or evaporation)
Heterogeneous Mixture

No uniform throughout. The component
substances can be visibly distinguished.
Homogeneous Mixture

Uniform throughout. The substances are evenly
mixed and cannot be visibly distinguished. The
particles of the substances are so small that they
cannot be seen easily.

Another name: solution
