Chemistry Unit 1 - P1 - Matter
Chemistry Unit 1 - P1 - Matter
Matter, Acids and Bases, Properties and Changes of Matter
Unit Essential Question:
What are the properties of matter and how is matter classified?
Matter
7.P.2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the
structure and properties of matter and that matter is conserved as
it undergoes changes.
Lesson Essential Questions:
What is matter?
Liquid
Gas
Matter is classified on the basis
of its composition.
Matter
Solid Liquid Gas
Pure
Mixtures
Substance
Variable Composition
Constant composition
Mixtures: Heterogeneous Pure substances:
& Homogeneous Elements & compounds
Element
Pure substances (constant composition) that
cannot be changed into simpler substances.
Elements are
composed of
one kind of atom.
Examples: Hydrogen,
Oxygen, Carbon
Compound
Another name: Molecule
Pure substances that are composed of 2 or more
elements that are chemically combined
Compounds can only be changed into simpler
substances called elements by chemical changes
One way that two or more atoms can combine is to
form a molecule.
Ex. CO2, H2O, H2O2, NaCl
Mixture
Made of two or more different substances that
retain their own individual properties and are
combined physically (mixed together)
Mixtures can be filtered by physical means
(filtration, sifting, or evaporation)
Heterogeneous Mixture
No uniform throughout. The component
substances can be visibly distinguished.
Homogeneous Mixture
Uniform throughout. The substances are evenly
mixed and cannot be visibly distinguished. The
particles of the substances are so small that they
cannot be seen easily.
