Theory of motivation
Existence
EXISTENCE
- This group of needs is concerned with providing the
basic requirements for material existence, such as
physiological and safety needs.
- Existence refers to our basic survival needs as humans
(food and water,shelter, good health, and feeling safe).
RELATEDNESS
- This group of needs focuses on the desire to
establish and maintain interpersonal relationships
with family, friends, co-workers, and employers.
- Relatedness refers to our need to relate to other
people, therefore to social and external esteem.
GROWTH
- These needs are about the fulfillment of desires to be
creative, and productive, and to complete meaningful tasks.
- These needs are all about personal development. In a work
context a person’s, career, or profession can provide
significant satisfaction with growth needs.
Difference between Maslow’s need hierarchy
Theory and Alderfer’s ERG Theory
• ERG Theory states that at a given point in time,
more than one need may be operational.
• ERG Theory also shows that if the fulfillment of
higher-level needs is subdued, there is an increase
in the desire for satisfying a lower-level need.
• According to Maslow, an individual remains at a
particular need level until that need is satisfied. While
according to ERG theory, if a higher-level need
aggravates, an individual may revert to increase the
satisfaction of a lower-level need. This is called the
frustration-regression aspect of the theory.
Three forms of relationship that exist between
the stages of Alderfer's theory:
1. Satisfaction/Progression
- Satisfaction of a more concrete stage increases the
likelihood of progressing to a less concrete stage but there is
no compulsion for satisfaction before progression.
2. Frustration/Regression
- If people finds it difficult to reach a particular
higher stage(frustrated), they can double their
effort in a lower stage to serve as a motivator in
achieving the higher one (regression).
3. Satisfaction/Strengthening
- Satisfaction does not necessarily lead to
progression as it can also cause the individual
to keep reveling in the pleasure of gratifying
the lower level need(strengthening) till he/she
is capable of achieving a higher level need.
How does Alderfer’s ERG theory work?
• Alderfer’s ERG theory of motivation states that
individuals can be motivated by multiple levels of
need at the same time and that the level Which is most
important to them can change over time.
CONCLUSION
Clayton Alderfer extended and simplified
Maslow's Hierarchy into a shorter set of three
needs: Existence, Relatedness, and Growth
(hence'ERG'). Unlike Maslow, he did not see
these as being a hierarchy, but being more of
a continuum.
