ELEMENT OF COMMUNICATION
LEXICAL COMPONENT- Refers to the word or
chain of words used to create meaning.
1.WORD- are unique meaningful component of speech.
Ex. Woman, animal, plants
2.PARTS OF WORDS- denote a single letter, prefix, or a
suffix added to a words.
Ex. S in animals, un in untold, er in speaker, ence in
difference, ly in timely

3. Phrasal verbs are verbs followed by a preposition or an adverb.
Ex.
 Point out (to direct attention to something)
The teacher pointed out the elevation form.
• Pass away (to die)
He passed away last year.
• Clamp down on (to strictly prevent something)
The Barangay officials decided to clamp down on the side walk
vendors.
• Dress up (to wear elegant clothes)
We need to dress up for the awards night.

4. COLLOCATIONS- are a pair or group of words that are habitually
used together that they sound correct together.
Ex.
• MAJOR PROBLEM (a big problem)
His absence created a major problem.
• STRONG COFFEE (coffee with a strong flavor or strong caffeine)
Expresso is an example of a strong coffee.
• HEAVY DRINKER (somebody who consumes more than
recommended)
My father is a heavy drinker.
• KEEP IN MIND (to remember something or someone)
Always keep me in mind

5. IDIOMS- combination of words whose collective meaning is not
predictable from those of the individuals words.
Examples:
• Once in a blue moon (very seldom)
This special event is one of the blue moon.
• Back to the drawing board (to start all over again)
The pitching was not successful so we the back to the drawing
board.
• Barking at the wrong tree (pointing fingers at the wrong person)
He is innocent. Stop barking at the wrong tree!

6. Sentence frames- group of words that provide a structure or a
skeleton for a complete sentence.
Examples:
• Acknowledging Ideas
My idea is similar to/related to ____________ s idea
I agree with ______________ that.
• Predicting
