Presentation On Compressed Air Production Using Vehicle Suspension System

This presentation discusses a system to produce compressed air using a vehicle's suspension system. The basic working involves using the up and down motion of the vehicle's wheels on irregular roads to suck in air which is then pressurized and stored in a tank. The objectives are to convert vibrational energy from the springs into pressure energy of the air without requiring extra input energy. The research methodology examines different types of automotive springs and suspension systems. Details of the system include specifications of the springs, air tank, and other components. The procedure involves assembling the wheel, spring, air pump and tank components. Testing showed the system can produce compressed air to potentially be used for tire inflation or other pneumatic applications in a simple, low

Introduction
➢ Suspension is the term given to the system of springs, shock absorbers
and linkages that connects a vehicle to its wheels

➢ Serve a dual purpose – contributing to the car's handling and braking.

➢ Protects the vehicle itself and any cargo or luggage from damage and
wear.

➢ Suspensions preserve the stability of a vehicle in pitching or rolling.

➢ Compressed Air is the air that is compressed and contained at a pressure

greater than atmosphere pressure.
Introduction (cont.)
➢ The air is compressed by taking a mass of air and reducing it into a smaller
space.

➢ The pressure comes from air trying to return to its original volume

➢ At a pressure of 7 bars, compressed air serves as a utility

➢ It is utilized in the following applications:

➢ Automobiles

➢ Pneumatic Drills

➢ Sprinkler Systems

➢ Air motors
Basic working:
● When the vehicle runs on the irregular roads then the wheel goes to
up and down motion.

● Arrangement attached on the wheel axle is used to suck the air from
the atmosphere.

● This pressurized or compressed air is stored inside the tank.

● The outlet of tank consists of valves which are used to supply the air
to other pneumatic applications.

● Here the non return valve is used to avoid the reversing of air flow
to the atmosphere.
Literature Review
➢ S.Vigneswari, V.Vinodhini et al.

➢ Compressed air can be produced using the suspension system.

➢ The vibration energy produced in the shockers due to road shocks can
be converted into pressure energy of the air.

➢ No input energy is required.

➢ Minimum wastage due to heat energy in the shockers.

➢ Useful application of Vibrational energy.

Objectives

➢ To convert the vibrational energy of springs into pressure energy of Air.

➢ Maintain stability and coordination of various systems of the system.

➢ To produce compressed air with no extra input of energy for automotive

purposes.

➢ To use this system in off-road vehicles.

Research Methodology
● Types of automotive springs

1)Leaf springs:-

2)Torsion bar:-
3) Coil springs (helical springs):
● Stores the energy produced in a most efficient way.
● Have advantage of fitting in a compact space.
● Comfort can be controlled to very fine degrees.

Four bar
● Triangulated type. ● Parallel type.

No use of Panhard bar Panhard bar is must

Beam axle with coil spring
● Used in front wheel drive cars (DEAD BEAM).
● One of the simple type of suspension system.
● Two integral trailing arms present.
● These are very popular because of simplicity and low cost.

Results and Discussions
Outcomes:-

● To convert vibration energy into pressure energy of air.

● To minimize the loss of vibration energy into heat energy.

● To use solid-axle suspension system as a mechanism to produce compressed air.

● To use this concept for compressed air vehicles

Advantages:-

● Construction expense is low.

● Loss of vibration energy can be prevented

● Easy to install

● Easy to control

● Maintenance is less.

● Needs minimal modifications in existent suspension systems.

● Can be used for independent suspension systems also.

Disadvantages:-

● Air needs to be released manually when Air tank is full, else we

need a pressure releasing valve .

● Adds additional weight to the vehicle.

● Occupies more space on the chassis.

● Rate of compressed air production is less.

● Increased ground clearance.

Applications:-

● Emergency tire filling.

● Can replace mechanically operated screw jack.

● Can be used to run Air conditioner.

● Alternative to supercharger.

● Potential alternative fuel.

● Cleaning applications on vehicle.

Conclusion

It was a thought to develop a system, being the part of mechanical engineering our prime
thought was to develop a system that would be simple, cheap and cost effective. This
project is still in its initial stage with almost no sort of information available or we can
say that very less research has been done till date. Taking consideration of these factors,
besides making advancement in this concept, our aim was also to highlight this concept
for future research. Initially picture was fading, to use what sort of system. A lots of
research and search work was done to device a system that would withstand our needs. A
quality work was done in the expansion of this concept of producing compressed air
using vehicle suspension system.
