DEFINITION
A term definition is a word or expression that
has a precise meaning in some uses or is
peculiar to a science, art, profession, or
subject. Defining terms is one way of helping
to resolve problems of ambiguity and there
are many types of definitions
TECHNICAL definition
• a definition in communication describing
or explaining technical terminology.

• are used to introduce the vocabulary which


makes Communication in a particular field
clear and precise.
TECHNICAL definition
• are an essential part of all technical and
scientific writing.

• Each field and specialty typically uses a


vocabulary that relays a variety of
specialized concepts by means of technical
language.
EXAMPLE:
• OPERATION – it is a procedure followed in
an instruction.

• SURF - it is a sports, where a person stands


on a board and rides with the waves.
OPERATIONAL definition
● it is a result of the process of
operationalization and it is used to define
something (term/object) in terms of
process.

● it is the process of defining a word/term of


how it is used in a sentence, or using
context clues.
OPERATIONAL definition

●it is the application of the word/term.


These may include the various
attempts to define or explain a certain
process and its properties including
but not limited to the characterization
of the event itself.
EXAMPLE:
COMPUTER
– (Technical) it is a device or machine used in
performing, assessing, evaluation and following
commands set by the users.

- (Operational) it is something used in doing


homework or browsing the internet.
EXAMPLE:
OPERATION
– (Technical) in a military field, it means a
mission with specific goals and objectives.

- (Operational) it is the procedure given to be


followed.

paragraph using the three ways
What are context clues?

Context clues are hints found within a


sentence, paragraphs, or passage that a
reader can use to understand the
meaning of the new or unfamiliar words.
What are context clues?
● When you use punctuation context clues, the
meaning of the word is usually right after the
unfamiliar word.
● it is often separated from the rest of the
sentence by commas, dashes, or parentheses.
The colon may also be used.
● Sometimes the word “or”, ‘that is’, or “in other
words’ is also used..
EXAMPLE:
1. His emaciation, that is, his skeleton-like appearance was
frightening to see.
“Skeleton-like appearance” is the definition of “emaciation.”

2. Milton was unusually precocious, he showed qualities or


abilities of an adult at an early age.

EXAMPLE:

Expanded definition

● is used to define technical terms with a


very detailed explanation, sometimes,
with the use of examples and visuals.

● Expanded definitions are usually found


in academic texts (Gonzales, et al.,
2017).

● is where the similarities and


differences of two or more things
are explored.

● Presents the general statement


and then provides specific and
concrete examples to expound
on the main idea.
3. Expanding by Describing a Process

● Organizes ideas or events according to

● Can either be in the form of narration or
a process
● Some writers consider this also as a
narration pattern
The process of baking a cheesy milky donut begins with the preparation of the different
ingredients.
In a bowl, mix all dry ingredients. Add evaporated milk and oil and mix well. Then use
clean hand to form
a dough. Knead dough and sprinkle some flour if it is too sticky. Cover the bowl and
rest the dough for 30
minutes to form gluten. After 30 minutes, dust dough mat with flour. Knead dough until
elastic and
smooth. Roll it into a log and cut into mini dough. Flatten dough and fill with cheese
cube then shape into
a ball. Rest dough filled with cheese for 10 minutes before frying. Lastly, fry in a
preheated oil until golden
brown over low heat. Then, roll in sugar and serve.
