Chapter 2 Example

This document discusses methods for calculating the net critical area and effective net area for bolted connections. It provides equations to calculate the effective net area when fastener holes are staggered or not staggered. The controlling failure path is the one that gives the largest stress on the minimum net area. An example problem is then presented to demonstrate checking the adequacy of a section used in a roof truss connection under a tensile force. The solution shows calculating the plastic and ultimate resistances of the gross and net sections to verify the section capacity exceeds the acting force.

Solved problems

Example .1
Calculate the net critical area for the bolt distribution shown
below.
Cont’d
When the fastener holes are not staggered the total
area to be deducted should be the maximum sum of the
sectional areas of the holes in any cross-section
perpendicular to the member axis.
no
Aeff  Ag  d
i 1
o ,i ti

Where: Ag = gross cross-sectional area

do,i = hole diameter at section i
tj = thickness of the section at i
Cont’d

For Staggered holes on the net sectional area Aeff can be

determined from:
n0 np
 s2 
A eff  Ag   d 0.i t i     t j
i 1 i 1  4 g  j

The controlling critical failure path is that which gives:

The largest stress on an effective net area.
The path that has minimum net area

Example-3
Check the section used as a main tie of the roof truss shown in the
Figure below. The section is formed with 2 unequal leg angle 100 x
75 x8 mm. Steel grade Fe 430 is used. The joint was made with 7
bolts diameter 20 mm as shown. The acting tensile force is 630 kN.
Solution

Solution
1. Plastic resistance of the gross section:

2. Ultimate resistance of the net section at the bolt holes.

Calculation of the Aeff. S = 3.5 cm and p = 4.1 cm.
Cont’d

 The design tension resistance capacity of the cross-section is 646.44
kN, therefore, because 646.44 kN > 630 kN, the section 1-1 used for
design is adequate.
