1. Cleaning
The switchgear shall be cleaned regularly to keep the surface of the
insulators and conductive parts clean. The switchgear shall be
cleaned in the case that the primary or secondary circuit of the
switchgear is not living. The surface of insulator shall be cleaned
with absolute alcohol.
Particular attention shall be paid to positions which are difficult to
clean, and the components shall be removed, cleaned and then
installed, otherwise the deposited dirt will lower the insulation level.
Components installed again, such as vacuum contactors, shall be
reviewed for parameters so as to make it up to the parameters
specified in the installation instruction of the vacuum contactor.

5. Attentions during maintenance

Switchgear body and handcarts are assembled in the
specified mold in the factory, and all fitting relationships are
guaranteed by mold, therefore, the users shall avoid
excessive disassembly and installation when they are
repairing the cabinets and handcarts. For all parts that need
to be removed, the method, procedure and positioning

Part V: Fault handling

1. Primary moving and fixed contacts

Treatment for wear, severe corrosion, damage or
overheating on the surface of primary fixed contact and
plum blossom contact for the handcart:
Replace the primary fixed contact and plum blossom contact.
After replacing the plum blossom contact of the handcart,
there is a need to check whether that the contact fingers and
the ring tensioning spring can fit perfectly.

Part V: Fault handling

2. Troubleshooting of current transformers

a) Secondary coil of the current transformer can not

open, once it can not be opened, stop the operation
immediately, check the insulation status of the secondary
coil while the iron core shall be demagnetized.
b) The overload of the current transformer will cause the
iron core to heat up, accelerating the aging of insulating
medium and resulting in damage. Therefore, if the current
transformer is found to be overloaded during operation, the
current transformer shall be replaced in time.

Part V: Fault handling

3. Troubleshooting of lightning arresters

a) If the sealing mixture at the top of the arrester and the
lower lead is broken or cracked, the arrester shall be
removed, dried and then fitted. Lightning arrester shall be
repaired if it is not sealed properly.
b) Shake the lightning arrester to check if there is any noise.
If there is noise, it indicates that the internal fixation is bad
and shall be repaired.
c) The lightning arrester shall be replaced when the following
conditions occur: serious burn of electrodes; valve plate with
breakdown or partial breakdown or flashover; Rubber seals
with severe aging, cracking or severe deformation and loss of
elasticity.
Introduction of HV switchgear
55
Part V: Fault handling

4. Troubleshooting of insulators and wall bushing

If there are cracks found on the insulators and wall bushing,
it is dangerous both in electrical performance and
mechanical performance and must be replaced.
If there are traces of creepage found on the insulators and
wall bushings, it is necessary to replace them
simultaneously, at the same time, strengthen the
management of the fouling and dampness so as to prevent
the creepage from happening again.
If discharge phenomenon appear at the external of insulators
and wall bushing, it is often effective to coat with a layer of
silicone grease film as a temporary repair.

56
Part V: Fault handling

5. Troubleshooting of voltage transformers

a) If the return circuit of the voltage transformers is found
broken, the protection and automatic device of the voltage
transformer shall be stopped to prevent the misoperation of the
protection.
b) If there is"crackling" sound or other noise of discharge in the
voltage transformer, it may be caused by internal short circuit,
grounding and looseness of clamping screw which is caused by
the damage of internal insulation, and the voltage transformers
shall be replaced.
c) There is any burnt smell, smoke and fire in the voltage
transformer. This situation shows that the internal is
overheated seriously, the insulation has been burned out, and the
voltage transformer shall be replaced.
Introduction of HV switchgear
57
Part V: Fault handling

6. Refuse operation of circuit breaker

a) Check whether there is any voltage of power supply.
b) Check whether the operation circuit can be connected.
c) Check whether the closing coil or switch coil is broken or
connected to the receiving circuit.
d) The auxiliary switch contact on the inspection mechanism
is not in place or in bad contact.

Introduction of HV switchgear
58
Part V: Fault handling

7. The circuit breaker can not be switched on or broken

after switching on

a) Check whether the operating voltage is too low.

b) Check whether the contact stroke of the circuit breaker's
contact rod is too large.
c) Whether the interlocking electric contact of the auxiliary
switch is broken too early.
d) Protection is not exited or protection exit action is caused
during switching on.

Introduction of HV switchgear
59
Part V: Fault handling

8. Heating and noise

It is inevitable that the switch is heating during operation. In
order to ensure the safe operation of the equipment, the
temperature for the main parts of the primary circuit (such as
primary moving and fixed contacts, busbar lapping point, etc.)
shall be measured periodically, if the temperature exceeds the
limit value, stop the power supply for overhaul in time.
In the course of live operation, the switching equipment will
produce noise due to electromagnetic effect and electrodynamic
effect, and the noise value shall not exceed 85dB. When an
abnormal sound occurs, check the reason and overhaul in time
to eliminate the abnormal sound. Contact the manufacturer if
necessary.
