NSTP Instructor
Why Is Self-Awareness So
Important?
1. Self-awareness is how you learn about yourself, your needs and your potential.

2. Self-awareness helps you minimize your reactions to help you make more
intentional decisions.

3. Self-awareness gives a voice to your inner voice.

4. It helps you see patterns in your thoughts and behaviors.

2
HOW TO PRACTICE SELF-
AWARENESS
1. Daily Writing Habit
1. Self-Reflect: What did you learn about
yourself today?
2. Connect: Did you meet someone new
today?
3. Create: What impactful work did you
create today?
4. Skill: What skill or concept did you learn
today.

4
2. Be aware of your strongest
reactions

3. Monitor your most negative

and positive feelings.
╸ When did it happen?
╸ With whom or who was it about?
╸ Where were you?
╸ Can you think of the spark that caused you
to have that feeling?

5
4. Pay attention to just one
aspect of your life you want to
change.
╸ Better attention management leads to improved
productivity, but it’s about much more than
checking things off a to-do list. The ultimate
result is the ability to create a life of choice,
around things that are important to you. It’s more
than just exercising focus. It’s about taking back
control over your time and your priorities.

6
BIBLICAL POINT OF VIEW
SELF-AWARENESS

1. That God created you.  ( Gen 1:27)

2. That you are wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14)
3. That God’s wonderful creation was destroyed because of sin.
( Romans 5:12)
4. That that destroyed God’s creation was quickened and restored by the Lord
Jesus Christ.
5. That you will be quickened and restored if you believe that Jesus washed
all your sins by His blood at the cross.

The difference between self-
development and personal
development
╸ SELF-DEVELOPMENT speaks about
human development while PERSONAL
DEVELOPMENT speaks about the
development of a person.

• A human is a psychosomatic union of
human flesh and human spirit. A person is
an entity that has been given legal and social
rights.
18
BIBLICAL POINT OF VIEW
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

╸ is the process of being changed into the image of Christ, from glory to
glory [2 Corinthians 3:18].Surely that means that Christians are making
upward progress, that they are growing and developing? In fact, it does not.
It means that we are being reduced, while He becomes greater – as in the
words of John the Baptist [John 3:30]

╸ it is the process of Christlikeness.

19
VALUES DEVELOPMENT
VALUES DEVELOPMENT
╸ Important and lasting beliefs or ideals shared by the
members of a culture about what is good or bad and
desirable or undesirable.

╸ the principles that help you to decide what is right and what
is wrong

╸ Personal values provide an internal reference for what is

good, beneficial, important, useful, beautiful, desirable and
constructive. Values are one of the factors that generate
behavior (besides needs, interests and habits) and influence
the choices made by an individual.

21
PERIODS OF
DEVELOPMENT 1 The Imprint Period

(Morris Massey)

• It is stated that between the ages of 3 years and 11 years is an imprint period. This
means that childhood experiences between these ages are likely to have an impact on
who that child becomes, how they feel, behave and represent the world to themselves in
later life.

• Up to the age of seven, we are like sponges, absorbing everything around us and
accepting much of it as true, especially when it comes from our parents. The
confusion and blind belief of this period can also lead to the early formation of
trauma and other deep problems

22
PERIODS OF
DEVELOPMENT 2 The Modeling Period

(Morris Massey)

• Between the ages of eight and thirteen, we copy people, often our parents, but also others. Rather than
blind acceptance of their values, we are trying them on like a suit of clothes, to see how they feel.
• At this age we may be much impressed with religion or our teachers. You may remember being
particularly influenced by junior school teachers who seemed so knowledgeable--maybe even more so
than your parents.

23
PERIODS OF
DEVELOPMENT 3 The Socialization Period

(Morris Massey)

• Between 13 and 21, we are very largely influenced by our peers.

• Other influences at these ages include the media, especially those parts which
seem to resonate with our the values of our peer groups.
