Positive and Negative Numbers: Click To Edit Master Subtitle Style

The document defines positive and negative numbers, with positive numbers being greater than zero and negative numbers being less than zero. It provides examples of how negative numbers are used to measure temperatures below zero, depths under sea level, and debt. The document then explains the rules for adding integers, noting that if signs are the same you add the numbers and keep the sign, and if signs are different you subtract the smaller number from the larger and keep the larger number's sign. It provides examples of adding integers using a number line by moving right for positive numbers and left for negative numbers.

Negative Numbers Are Used to Show Debt

Lets say your parents bought a car but had to get a loan from the bank for $5,000. When counting all their money they add in -$5.000 to show they still owe the bank.

Positive & Negative Numbers

Working with positive and negative numbers is like driving in traffic. You have to watch the traffic signs and follow the driving rules.

Hint

If you dont see a negative or positive sign in front of a number it is positive.

Integer Addition Rules

Rule #1 If the signs are the same, pretend the signs arent there. Add the numbers and then put the sign of the addends in front of your answer.

9 + 5 = 14 -9 + -5 = -14

Solve the Problems -3 + -5 = -8 4 + 7 = 11 (+3) + (+4) = 7 -6 + -7 = -13 5 + 9 = 14 -9 + -9 = -18

Integer Addition Rules

Rule #2 If the signs are different pretend the signs arent there. Subtract the smaller from the larger one and put the sign of the larger one in front of your answer.
Larger number

-9 + +5 = 9 - 5 = 4 Answer = - 4

Solve These Problems 5 3 = 2 -2 3 + -5 = -4 + 7 = 3 74=3 (+3) + (-4) = 4 3 = 1 -1 -6 + 7 = 1 76=1 5 + -9 = 9 5 = 4 -4 -9 + 9 = 99=0 0
