UNIT # 4

Apply The Knowledge Of

Problem Solving
Problem Solving
Definition:
Problem-solving is a process of solving any kind of
problem. This process is acted upon in some steps.
These steps start from identifying the problem and
determining the cause of the problem. After the
problem and its cause are identified, the next step is to
select alternatives for the solution and implement the
solutions.
Steps of Problem Solving
Following are the steps of Problem Solving:

1. Identify and define the problem

2. Generate possible solutions
3. Evaluate alternatives
4. Decide on a solution
5. Implement the solution
6. Evaluate the outcome
Critical Thinking
Definition:
Critical thinking is a kind of thinking in which
you question, analyze, interpret, evaluate and make a
judgement about what you read, hear, say, or write. The
term critical comes from the Greek
word kritikos meaning “able to judge or discern”. Good
critical thinking is about making reliable judgements
based on reliable information.
Steps of Critical Thinking
Following are the steps of Critical Thinking:

1. Formulate the question

2. Gather information
3. Apply the information
4. Consider the implications
5. Explore other points of view
Application of Problem Solving
Many employers are recognizing the value and placing
significant investments in developing the problem solving
skills of their employees.  Here are some real-life examples
of how you can apply problem solving skills on the job
every day.

1. Patient Assessments
When you notice the change in patients condition, you have
to use your problem solving skills to decide what's the next
step. Problem solving allows you to provide the best and
safest care possible.
Application of Problem Solving (Cont.)
2. Stuck in traffic and late for work
With busy schedules and competing demands for your time,
getting where you need to be on time can be a real
challenge.  When traffic backs up, problem solving skills
can help you figure out alternatives to avoid congestion,
resolve the immediate situation and develop a solution to
avoid encountering the situation in the future.

3. Proposal deadline got moved up to this afternoon!

You’ve been working on that big proposal for weeks and its
down to the final 3 days when you receive a call that the
deadline has been moved up to today.  Problem solving
skills can help you figure out whether you will be able to
meet the new deadline and how your approach may need to
change.
Definition of Negotiation:
A negotiation is a strategic discussion that resolves an
issue in a way that both parties find acceptable. In a
negotiation, each party tries to persuade the other to
agree with his or her point of view. By negotiating, all
involved parties try to avoid arguing but agree to reach
some form of compromise.
Definition of Collaboration:
The best way to define collaboration would be to outline
it as the process of two or more people or organizations
working together to complete a task or achieve a goal. It
is also defined as two or more people working together
to achieve shared goals.
Significance of Negotiation and
Collaboration in Multidisciplinary Team

 Healthcare, by design, is a multidisciplinary profession in

which doctors, nurses, and health professionals from various
specialties must work together, communicate often, and share
resources.

 Because teamwork is centered on solid communication and

negotiation, patients and their families sometimes feel more
at ease and report that they accept prescribed treatments and
feel more satisfied with their healthcare regimens when a
multidisciplinary teamwork approach is in place.
Significance of Negotiation and
Collaboration in Multidisciplinary Team
 Effective negotiation among staff encourages effective
teamwork and promotes continuity and clarity within the
patient care team. At its best, good negotiation encourages
collaboration, fosters teamwork, and helps prevent errors.

 Patient safety experts agree that negotiation and

teamwork skills are essential for providing quality health
care.  When all clinical and nonclinical staff collaborate
effectively, health care teams can improve patient outcomes,
prevent medical errors, improve efficiency and increase
patient satisfaction.
Strategy to Develop Negotiation and
Collaboration in Multidisciplinary Team

 Schedule sufficient time for team building and give the

work group a clear timeline.

 Consider opportunities to foster mutual trust among the

care team, especially sharing patient success stories.

 Create opportunities for team members to get to know

each other and interact outside of patient care.
Strategy to Develop Negotiation and
Collaboration in Multidisciplinary Team

 Develop workflow with special attention to method and

timing of team member communication.

 Hold case conferences for all members of a team to meet

and discuss challenging patients.

 Encourage whole team responsibility for quality and

outcomes of behavioral health care.
