Lec1 HCI Introduction2

Here are the answers to your questions: Q1: No, the actions users can perform are not clear from this interface. There are no labels or tooltips to indicate what each button or area of the interface does. Q2: Function/Objective: Edit and manage documents Interface: Toolbar buttons Functional Part: Underlying word processing software Interaction: Click buttons using mouse or touch User Tasks: Open, save, print, edit text, format text, etc. The interface does not clearly communicate its functionality and possible user tasks based on the lack of labels or tooltips. This could lead to confusion and usability issues.

What is HCI?
• A discipline concerned with interactive solutions to
problems that people have

• “Human-computer interaction is a discipline concerned

with the design, evaluation and implementation of
interactive computing systems for human use and with
the study of major phenomena surrounding them” (ACM
Curriculum)

Efficiency
Accuracy
Satisfaction
Recall, …

But if well-designed related to given context.

Why HCI?
• In past, computers were expensive and used by
technical people only.

• Current, Computers are cheap and used by non-

technical people (different backgrounds, needs,
knowledge, and skills).

• Hardware and Software manufacturers have noticed

the importance of making the computers user-
friendly, easy to use, time saving, etc.
HCI Questions
• HCI answers questions concerning how people
interact with computers

• Are computers intuitive or complicated?

• Are computers user-friendly. What does it mean to be

user-friendly.

• How computers be made accessible to everybody

with different abilities i.e., physical abilities,
language abilities.
HCI Questions
HCI Scope Content
• Use and Context
• Application areas for computers

• Human
• Study psychological and physiological aspects. For example, study
how a user learns to use a new product

• Computer
• Hardware and Software including input & output devices, speed,
interaction styles, computer graphics

• Development
• Design, implementation, and Evaluation
HCI Goals
• HCI is concerned with making systems easy to
learn and use
• Develop or improve
• Usability
• Utility
• Effectiveness
• Efficiency
• Safety
• Appeal
of systems that include computers.
HCI Goals – Usability
• Usability
• Ease of learning and easy to use

• Can I use the basic functions of a new digital camera

without reading the manual?

• Does the software facilitate us to learn new functions

easily?
HCI Goals – Utility
• Utility
• Extent of providing the right kind of functionality so
that users can do what they need or want to do

• High utility: scientific calculator provides many

mathematical functions, formulae, and is programmable

• Low utility: Software drawing tool does not allow free-

hand drawing but supports polygon shape drawing
HCI Goals – Effectiveness and Efficiency
• Effectiveness
• concern a user’s ability to accomplish a desired goal or to
carry out work.

• Find a master thesis in our library web.

• Efficiency
• A measure of how quickly users can accomplish their goals
or finish their working using the system.

• Find a master thesis in our library web whose author’s last

name is “Chen”.
HCI Goals – Safety

• Safety
• Protecting the user from dangerous conditions and
undesirable situations

• Medical equipment in Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

• Computerised nuclear energy plant

• Prevent user from making serious error by reducing

risk of wrong keys/buttons being mistakenly activated

• Provide user with means of recovering erros

HCI Goals – Appeal

• Appeal
• How well the user likes the system
• First impression
• Long-term satisfaction
MS Word – HCI Goals
Question
Benefits of HCI
• Computers are required in all fields
• So, does HCI

• Improve Productivity
• Reduce Development Cost
• Lowering Support Cost
• Gain Market Share
Benefits of HCI
Good designed interfaces
• Improve Productivity
• Fast working speed of company’s employees

• Reduce Development Cost

• Avoid implementing features users don’t want

• Lowering Support Cost

• Calls to customer support can be enormous

• Gain Market Share

• People intend to buy/use products with higher usability
Good vs Bad Interface
Good vs Bad Interface
HCI Functionality
• Lamp Example
• Function/Objective: Illuminate the environment
• Interface: Power switch button
• Functional Part: Light Bulb
• Interaction: Press “on” and “off” to turn lights on and off
• User Tasks: Turn on the lamp, Turn off the lamp

• MS Word
• Function/Objective: to edit a document
• Interface: windows, icons, menus, etc.
• Functional Part: buttons to execute commands for file
handling
• Interaction: use mouse to click different functions
• User Tasks: edit file, save file.

Q1: Can users see the actions they can perform? Is it clear
which operations will be done by each action?
