Dr. Homi Bhabha


Homi Jehangir Bhabha was born on 30 October 1909 and
died on 24 January 1966.
he was an Indian nuclear physicist

He is also knows as "father of the Indian nuclear


programme".
He lived in Mumbai’s Malabar Hill.
Bhabha encouraged research in electronics,space science,microbiology and radio astronomy.

He was the founding director and professor of physics at the Tata Institute of
Fundamental Research (TIFR)
also the founding director of the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET) which
was renamed the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in his honour.
TIFR and AEET served as the cornerstone of the Indian nuclear energy and weapons
programme.
He was awarded Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honour,in 1954.

Bhabha received several honorary doctoral degrees in science throughout his career: Patna (1944), Lucknow
(1949), Banaras (1950), Agra (1952), Perth (1954), Allahabad (1958), Cambridge (1959), London (1960) and
Padova (1961).

• Bhabha died when Air India Flight 101 crashed near


Mont Blanc on 24 January 1966.
C.V. Raman
Sir Chandrasekhara Vekanta Raman
C.V. Raman was born on 7 November 1888 and
died on 21 November 1970
He was an Indian physicist known for his work in
the field of light scattering.
• Raman received the 1930 Nobel
Prize in Physics for the discovery of
Raman effect.
• he was the first Asian to receive a
Nobel Prize in any branch of science.
• Sir C.V. Raman continued his work at
the Raman Research Institute, until
his sudden death in 21 November
1970.
• ‘Raman Effect’ has proved to be a
very useful tool for scientists.
• Twenty Eighth February has been
declared as National Science Day by
the Indian Government to
commemorate Sir C V Raman and
his work.
Vikram Sarabhai
• Dr. Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai (12 August
1919 – 30 December 1971)
• he was an Indian physicist and
astronomer who initiated space
research and helped develop nuclear
power in India.
• He was also the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission
• Vikram Sarabhai, along with, The ‘Father of India’s Nuclear Science Program‘,
Homi Bhabha had set up the first rocket launching station in India.
• He was instrumental in establishing the Indian Space Research Organisation
(ISRO) in 1969.

• After the death of Homi Bhabha, Vikram Sarabhai was largely responsible for
the establishment and development of nuclear power plants in India.
He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1966.

Dr.Sarabhai was very interested in science


education and founded a Community
Science Centre at Ahmedabad in 1966.
Today, the Centre is called the Vikram
Sarabhai Community Science Centre.

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai died on 30 December


1971 at Kovalam, Thiruvananthapuram,
Kerala.
