Understanding Z Scores 1

This document provides information about z-scores and how to calculate them. It defines z-scores as a way to locate a score within a sample or population based on the normal distribution. It gives the formula for calculating z-scores as z=(X-μ)/σ, where X is the score, μ is the mean, and σ is the standard deviation. Several examples are provided of calculating z-scores given specific data sets.

Understanding
the
Z-Scores
OBJECTIVES

At the end of the 50-minutes lesson, the students are expected to:

1. Understand the concept of the z-score; and

2. find the z-value that corresponds to a given score.

The z-score

The areas under the normal curve are given in terms of z-values or
scores. Either the z-score locates X within a sample or within a
population.
5

Formula for calculating z-score value:

Given the mean , =50 and the standard deviation, =4 of a

population of reading scores. Find the z-value that corresponds to a
score X=58.

Example 1.

The scores of students in the first quarter examination for

Mathematics has a mean (µ) 32 and standard deviation (σ) of 5.
Find the z-scores corresponding to each of the following.

1. 37
2. 22
3. 33
4. 28
5. 40
6. 27
7. 34
8. 30

Solution:

1. z = = = = 1 6. z= = = = -1

2. z = = = = -2 7. z= = = = 0.4

3. z= = = = 0.2 8. z= = = = -0.4

9. z= = = =0
4. z= = = = -0.8

5. z= = = = 1.6 10.z= = = = -1.4
