Cultural Belonging I am Mexican American. Both my parents were born in Durango, Mexico. I was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. I share both ethnicities in my life. I am fluent in both languages, English and Spanish. I celebrate almost every American holiday and some Mexican holidays. I eat all the delicious Mexican plates. I chase the same American Dream in this country, but I also have the great work ethic and spirit of Mexicans. Life Experiences ❏ I grew up in a pretty stable household. My mom would take my siblings and I to school in the morning and she’d have dinner ready by the time school was out. My dad would pick us up after school and take care of us while my mom was at work. My childhood was pretty much like that until my brother was old enough to take care of us. ❏ When I entered high school, I started playing soccer and I’ve been playing since. I love the sport and it has taught me to become a team player, not just in the field but out of the field as well. ❏ After high school, I began working and studying and till this day I work and study. My second year of college I realized I wanted to become a teacher so I switched my major to Elementary Education. ❏ In college, I learned a lot of life lessons. I am watching my parents and grandparents and the elder people in my life age just like I am. I am cherishing each and every moment I have them and being nicer to them and trying my best to understand them. ❏ During Covid, I lost my grandmother and me and my family are still coping with it. It’s not easy, it’s the most difficult hardship in my life but life goes on and all I can do is remember her and live everyday for her. My Worldview ● I’ve been starting to live my life less bitter and more understanding. I get mad, sad, frustrated, stressed, and depressed, but I am learning to accept my feelings and understand that it is okay to feel these things, but it is not okay to react. ● I learned that the only way I can be myself is by being nice and generous and helping people out when I can. ● I believe in dignity and having dignity is doing the right thing even when no one is looking or judging you. It’s doing the right thing for you. ● My long term goal is to teach everything I learn to my future students and enrich their lives and I hope I am happy doing that. Cultural Artifacts 1.
