Frequency Reuse Definition

Frequency Reuse is the process in which the same set of

frequencies can be allocated to more than one cell, provide the
cells are at a certain minimum distance apart referred to as
frequency reuse distance. The design process of selecting and
allocating channels groups for all of the cellular base station within
a system is called Frequency Reuse or Frequency Planning.

Co-channel interference
•  Cochannel Interference (CCI) occurs in
those channels that reuse the same range
of frequencies.
• It causes crosstalk, a phenomenon where
signals in one channel affect the ones in
the other. ...
• Cochannel interference is also known as
inter-cell interference.

Advantages of frequency reuse
• Allows communications within cell on a given
frequency
• Limits escaping power to adjacent cells
• Allows re-use of frequencies in nearby cells
• Uses same frequency for multiple conversations
• 10 to 50 frequencies per cell

Frequency reuse factor
The frequency reuse factor is given by the equation:FRF = N/C
Where, FRF: frequency reuse factor ,N: total no. Of channels in an area
C: total no. Of channels in a cell
With a smaller frequency resuse factor more bandwidth can be obtained for each
cell

Frequency Reuse Distance

The frequency reuse distance depends on the following factors:
•Number of co-channel cells in the vicinity of the central cell.
•Type of geographic terrain contour.
•Antenna height
•Transmitted power at each cell site

The frequency reuse distance (D) is determined by the formula: D=R*√3N

Where N=No. Of cells in the frequency reuse pattern.
          R=Cell radius.

Examples of frequency reuse
• In UMTS Frequency reuse factor is 1, neighbouring
cells can operate on the same frequency band.
• UMTS LTE uses fractional reuse. Users near base
stations reuse the same frequencies (OFDM
subcarriers), while users at the cell border are
allocated to subcarriers in a coordinated manner
between base stations in order to minimize
interferences

Conclusions

• Features of using Frequency Reuse:

• Frequency reuse improve the spectral efficiency and signal Quality
(QoS).
• Frequency reuse classical scheme proposed for GSM systems offers a
protection against interference.
• The number of times a frequency can be reused is depend on the
tolerance capacity of the radio channel from the nearby transmitter
that is using the same frequencies.
• In Frequency Reuse scheme, total bandwidth is divided into different
sub-bands that are used by cells.
• Frequency reuse scheme allow WiMax system operators to reuse the
same frequencies at different cell sites.
