Lesson 2 1 Identifying and Preparing Drafting Tools 1

This document provides information about drafting tools. It begins by outlining the learning objectives as understanding different drafting tools and their functions and being able to identify different tools and functions. It then asks questions about what drafting tools are, what the different tools are, and the importance of drafting tools. The document proceeds to define drafting tools as tools used for making drawings and measuring drawings. It describes who uses these tools and why it is important to know the different tools. The bulk of the document identifies and describes individual drafting tools like pencils, erasers, paper, protractors, compasses, templates, triangles, and a drafting table. It emphasizes the importance of preparing tools and having the right tools for accurate drawings. It

TOOLS
At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:
1.Understand the different drafting tools, their
functions.
2.Identify the different drafting tools and their
functions
1. What are drafting tools?
2. What are the different drafting tools?
3. What is importance of drafting tools?
What are drafting tools?

Are tools used for making drawing

and measuring drawings.
Who uses these tools?
• Drafting tools are used by student taking up the
subject technical or mechanical drafting or
engineering students to produce drawings with
accurate measurement.
• Drafting tools are also used by draftsman or
engineers in creating their architectural plan (floor
plan of house or building).
Why do we need to know the
different drafting tools?
Why do we need to know the
different drafting tools?
Why do we need to know the
different drafting tools?

It helps in producing drawing with accuracy in

lines, distance and even measurements. Without
these tools we cannot produce quality drawings
which is needed for its actual construction.
DRAFTING
TOOLS
DRAWING PENCILS
Also called as drafting
pencil and they are
used in making
drawings. High quality
pencils varies in sizes
of lead.

PENCIL SHARPENER

This is used to
sharpen your
pencil.
DRAWING PAPER
Also known as drafting paper and
this is where all drawings are being
drawn.
ELECTRIC ERASER
Used to erase
quickly the
mistakes we
made in our
drawings.
ERASER

Used to erase
mistakes in your
drawing.
DRAFTING BRUSH
Drafting brush or
brush erases
crumbs and
debris from the
drafting table.
ERASING SHIELD
Used to protect
lines or parts of
your drawings
you don’t want to
erase.
ERASING SHIELD

REMEMBER:
Be very careful in using the
erasing shield cause you
might injure yourself. Don’t
ever try to play this tool.
T-SQUARE
Used to draw horizontal
lines and support
triangles to draw vertical,
horizontal lines
accurately.
DRAFTING TAPE
Used to hold paper in
place while making
your drawing.
PROTRACTOR
• Used to measure
and lay out
angles. It helps in
locating angles in
your drawings.
COMPASS
Used to draw circles and arcs.
Using this tool you will be able to
create or produce a perfect circle
and arcs for your drawings. From
small to big circle, by adjusting
the compass you can make them.
The compass varied from small to
big size and it can be made out of
metal or plastic.
CIRCLE TEMPLATE
Template used to
draw circles and
arcs. This can be
used by those who
have difficulty in
using the compass.

This template however, has a limit size for

bigger circles when using it, unlike the
compass, you can fill a coupon bond if you
want to draw a circle or arc.
IRREGULAR CURVE

This is a drafting
tools used to draw
non-circular curves.
DIVIDERS
DIVIDE

AMES LETTERING
UIDE

Used to draw
guidelines for lettering.
Proper lettering is a
must in drafting. This
tool is helpful for those
who have difficulty
writing proper letters in
their drawings.
AMES LETTERING
GUIDE

Notice that in using the lettering guide,

the T-square must assist it to
accurately put the dots as it will be the
pattern in writing the letters.
METRIC
SCALE
A tool used in resizing
the actual
measurement or size
of drawings. It uses
metric system or it is
read through the
metric system (mm,
cm).

The measurement in all drawings in drafting

is very important because it serves as guide
for the actual construction of any drawing.
Any building or house you see by your eyes
came from drawing with its measurements.
RULER
Use to measure distances of
line and. In drafting it is not
oftenly used to make
horizontal and vertical lines
as it cannot give you the
accuracy that you needed
especially when you plan to
draw more than 12 inches of
line.
ELLIPSE
TEMPLATE
Template used to draw ellipse.
Any drawing that has ellipse on
it, this template is helpful.
ADJUSTABLE
TRIANGLE
Used to draw angles
from 0 to 90 degrees.
It can also be used to
draw diagonal lines
with the assistance of
the T-square.
45  TRIANGLE

Used to draw
45 and 90
angles
30 - 60 TRIANGLE

Used to draw
30 and 60
degree angles
Notice the cube drawn in the picture. It
was accurately and perfectly drawn
using the triangle and with the
assistance of the T-square.
HOUSE PLAN
TEMPLATE
Used to draw symbols on
floor plans. Floor plans are
created by architect for the
future construction of a house
or a building. The floor plan
template contains different
symbols for doors, window or
even walls for the plan.
PLAN
TEMPLAT
E

Notice the arrow pointing towards

the template, it is the floor plan
symbol for a door.
DRAFTING
TABLE
Smooth, firm surface used to
draw on. A drafting table must
be smooth when making
drawings to avoid putting holes
in your drawing. Rough drafting
table will likely destroy your own
drawing by producing a not so
good looking and a dirty
drawing.
Why is it important to
prepare these tools?
1. You’ll know in advance the tools that
are missing lacking.
2. You will be able to finish your drawing
on time or just before the time allotted.
3.You won’t waste your time looking for
tools while making your drawing.
How are you going to
prepare these tools:
1. Take all the tools that you only needed.
2. Check all the tools that you needed
before using them.
3. Make sure to return the tools to its
cabinet in preparation for your next
drawing.
