Automatic Toll Collection

This document describes an automatic toll collection system project. The system uses various sensors like IR, ultrasonic, RFID and a GSM module to automatically detect vehicles and deduct toll fees. It aims to reduce congestion at toll plazas by speeding up the collection process. The system works by detecting vehicles with IR sensors and identifying RFID tags for fee deduction. Ultrasonic sensors measure the queue length while the GSM module sends notifications. A microcontroller coordinates the system. This automated process allows contactless fee collection to save time and fuel at toll plazas.

Introduction
As we all know that transportation is the backbone of any country’s
economy. Improvement in transportation systems result into the good
lifestyle in which we achieve extraordinary freedom for movement,
immense trade in manufactured goods and services, as well as higher rate of
employment levels and social mobility. In fact, the economic condition of a
nation has been closely related to efficient ways of transportation. Increasing
number of vehicles on the road, result into number of problems such as
congestion, accident rate, air pollution and many other . All economic
activities for different tasks use different methods of transportation. For this
reason, increasing transportation is an immediate impact on productivity of
nation and the economy. Reducing the cost of transporting resource at
production sites and transport completed goods to markets is one of the
important key factors in economic competition. Automatic toll collection is
a technology allows the automated electronic collection of toll costs.

GSM Module 800l
• The SIM800l is a cheap and portable GSM
breakout board with all the capabilities of the
larger SIM900 shields. In this Arduino
SIM800L tutorial, I will help you get started
with this nifty device. Sending and receiving
texts with your Arduino have never been easier
• Voltage: 3.7-4.2V
• Module size: 2.5cmx2.3cm
• TTL serial port for serial port, you can link
directly to the microcontroller. Power module
automatically boot, homing network

Fire Sensor
• The flame sensor works based on infrared
radiation. The IR photodiode will detect the IR
radiation from any hot body. This value is then
compared with a set value. Once the radiation
reaches the threshold value, the sensor will change
its output accordingly.
• Voltage: 3.7-5V
• Module size: 3cmx1.6cm
• If the flame intensity is lighter within 0.8m then
the flame test can be activated, if the flame
intensity is high, then the detection of distance will
be improved.

Ultrasonic Sensor
• The Ultrasonic transmitter transmits an
ultrasonic wave, this wave travels in air and
when it gets objected by any material it gets
reflected back toward the sensor this reflected
wave is observed by the Ultrasonic receiver
module
• Voltage: 3.7-5V
• Module size: 3cm x 2cm
• Measuring angle covered: <15°
• Operating Current: <15mA
• Operating Frequency: 40Hz

Servo Motor
• Servo motors or “servos”, as they are known, are
electronic devices and rotary or linear actuators that
rotate and push parts of a machine with precision.
Servos are mainly used on angular or linear
position and for specific velocity, and acceleration.
• Voltage: 5V
• Torque: 2.5kg/cm
• Operating speed is 0.1s/60°
• Gear Type: Plastic
• Rotation : 0°-180°
• Weight of motor : 9gm

LM2596 Power Supply is a step-down(buck)
switching regulator, capable of driving a 3-A load
with excellent line and load regulation. These
devices are available in fixed output voltages of 3.3
V, 5 V, 12 V, and an adjustable output version. The
LM2596 series operates at a switching frequency of  Buck Converter

We manually implanted the RFID tag in the demo car for vehicle information. We had scanned each
RFID tag before implemented the project to know about the unique ID and stored it into the database
of our system. In our prototype, we only included the RFID number and balance information in
database. When the project will be implemented, there will be detailed information about the vehicle
like weight, Model and tracking system of the vehicle. In the proposed model, the vehicle passes
through the toll plaza and RFID reader reads the information about the balance of the vehicle with the
help of RFID tag. If the vehicle has sufficient balance in its account, the toll money has been deducted
and balance has been updated in database. After scanning, LCD Display shows the RFID number and
the text “Go forward”. Then, with the help of servo motor the toll gate opens for 4 seconds and it
closes after that limited time.
If an unfortunate occurrence happens that the vehicle does not have sufficient money in its account,
the toll gate will not open and display shows “Access Denied, go left”. At left, there is a manual toll
collection booth. The vehicle has to pay there and get updated the database with a warning to keep
sufficient balance. Meanwhile, other car can pass the toll gate without making any traffic jam.

FUTURE WORK SCOPE
1. Automatic Vehicle Identification: The automatic vehicle identification (AVI) component
of this system refers to the technologies that determine the identification or ownership of
the vehicle so that the toll will be charged to the corresponding customer.
2. Automatic Vehicle Classification: Vehicle type and class may have differentiated toll
amount. The vehicle type may include light vehicles like the passenger car or heavy
vehicles like recreational vehicles. A vehicle’s class can be determined by the physical
attributes of the vehicle, the number of occupants in the vehicle, the number of axles in
the vehicles and the purpose for which the vehicle is being used at the time of
classification
3. Video Enforcement System: When used for electronic toll collection, the video
enforcement system (VES) captures images of the license plates of vehicles that pass
through an electronic tollbooth without a valid electronic tag. Although the deployment
of these technologies makes the initial cost of installation very high, but there exits huge
benefits accompanied with such high investment. These benefits are discussed in the
upcoming section.

CONCLUSION
The Automatic Toll Collection system in expressway based on RFID, a design scheme was put
forward. It is low cost, high security, far communication and efficiency, etc. It not only improves
the passage ability of expressway but also improves the technology level of charge. Automatic
toll collection system using RFID is an effective measure to reduce management costs and fees,
at the same time, greatly reduce noise and pollutant emission of toll station. In the design of the
proposed Automatic toll collection (ATC) system, real time toll collection and anti-theft solution
system have been designed. This reduces the manual labour and delays that often occur on
roads. This system of collecting tolls is eco friendly and also results in increased toll lane
capacity. Also an anti-theft solution system module which prevents passing of any defaulter
vehicle is implemented, thus assuring security on the roadways.
