SQCT Assignment 1

The document contains details of an assignment submitted by 5 students to their professor. It includes 2 questions with solutions: 1) The first question analyzes the association between breathability and wicking action ranks of 6 fabrics using rank correlation and finds no association at the 99% confidence level. 2) The second question calculates the 99% confidence limit for standard deviation of the average soil releasability of 7 samples. The document also includes a third question analyzing quality control of a consignment based on defectives found in samples.

ASSIGNMENT

Question - From a group of professionals we asked to rank breathability and wicking action of 6 fabric
on wearing between 1 to 10, following data was obtained :-
Fabric 1 2 3 4 5 6

Breathability rank 7 6 8 9 7 7.5

Wicking rank 6 7 7.5 8 8.5 7

Find if there is any association existing? (take 99% confidence limit)

Solution-

  1 2 3 4 5 6

Breathability rank 7 6 8 9 7 7.5

Wicking 6 7 7.5 8 8.5 7

rank

d 1 -1 0.5 1 -1.5 0.5

d2 1 1 0.25 1 2.25 0.25

∑d2 = 5.75

Rank correlation (Rs) =1- (6∑ d2 /n(n2 -1)) 𝛼

=1-[6*5.75/6(62-1)]

=1-0.164 = 0.835

 t(calculated)=Rs (n-2/1-Rs2 )½

=0.835(6-2/1-0.8352)½

=3.634

For degree of freedom= 6-2 =4 𝛼=0.01 , t(table) =3.75

In this case t(calculated) is less than t(table) so it is concluded that no existing association at 99%
confidence level.
Question: - The average soil releasability per sample for 7 samples is calculated as:-
6.8 7.9 7.3 7.9 8.0 7.2 6.9

Find 99% confidence limit for S.D. ?

Solution -

Mean = (6.8+7.9+7.3+7.9+8.0+.7.2+6.9)/7 = 7.4

X
6.8 7.9 7.3 7.9 8.0 7.2 6.9

x- x̅ -0.6 0.5 -0.1 0.5 0.6 -0.2 -0.5

(x- x)̅ 2 0.36 0.25 0.01 0.25 0.36 0.04 0.25

S2= (Σ(x- x̅)2 /n-1)1/2

= (1.52/6)½

=0.503

𝝌2 =((n-1) S2)/𝝈2

(n-1)S2/𝝌2 0.025 <= 𝝈2 <= (n-1)S2/ 𝝌2 0.975

(6*(0.503)2)/<= 𝝈2 <= (6*(0.503)2)/1.237

0.105 <= 𝝈2 <= 1.227

Questions: - A ship of consignment just arrived at Port, consignment inspector had inspected and sent
the following data for indication of quality of consignment, the number of defectives found in 20
samples of 1000 each are as given below 45, 77, 38, 67, 80, 76, 51, 45, 89, 43, 69, 67, 43, 100, 20,
89, 90, 45, 56 and 87. Do these indicate that the quality characteristic under inspection is under
statistical control?

Solution: -

Let N denote number of defectives = 1247

P = 20/1000 = 0.02

Limits =N*p ± 3√N*p*(1-p)

Mean = 24.94

U.C.L. = 39.77

L.C.L. = 10.10
Since Majority of samples are laying outside the lower and upper control limits the process is not in
state of statically control
Questions: - The number of thick places in equal lengths of similar yarn spun
on four different spinning machines was counted, with the following results:
Loom No. 1 2 3 4 5

No. of faults 33 49 46 40 42

Solution.
No. of thick places Expected frequency, (fe) = = 42
fo fe fo – f e (fo – fe)2 (fo – fe)2/fe

33 42 -9 81 1.93

49 42 7 49 1.16

46 42 5 25 0.595

40 42 -2 4 0.095

42 42 0 0 0

χ 2 = (fo – fe)2/fe = 3.78

From table : At 95%, χ2= 9.488 at v = 4 As calculated value is less than table
value so conclude that there is no significant difference
Questions: - A company produces Towels and supplies them in the pack of 70
each. The manufacturer knows from the past experience that 2% of the Towels
produced by his company may be defective. If the manufacturer selects any one
pack at random from the production line and checks it, what is the probability that
he will find at most two defective Towel?
Solution:
Here, X: Number of defective Towels in a pack of 70
Let, X ~ B (n, p)
Given that,
n = 70(Very large)
p = p(success) = P (defective Towel) = 1% = 0.02 (Very small)
Hence,
X ~ P (λ = np = 1.4) approximately.
Thus,
p(x)= x=1, 2,.…, 70
Now,
P (the pack contains at most 2 defective Towel) = P [X = 1,2] = P [X = 1] + P
[X = 2]
P [X = 1] = = 0.345.
P [X = 2] = = 0.172.
P (the pack contains at most 2 defective Towel) =
P [X = 1,2]=0.345+0.172=0.5175
That is, there is approximately 52% chance that the pack will contain at most
two defective Towel.
