MSC Project Management: Assignment Advice

This document provides instructions for two project management assignments. Students will [1] develop a Project Brief pitching a potential future project in 10 PowerPoint slides along with a 2000-word narration transcript. They will then [2] create a 3000-word Project Initiation Documentation (PID) for the same project, including a definition, approach, business case, team structure, and plan. The PID will comprise 60% of the module's assessment. Students should start planning early and use feedback from the first assignment to strengthen their PID submission.

any project and that you can use in future to impress
potential future employers

Assignment Background
As a project manager you are required to identify a potential future project
within an organisation of your choice, of which you are aware or have
experienced. This project should be aimed at delivering outputs that will
enable an increase in the number of future customers for a product or service.
It will be helpful if you could describe the business challenge that the
organisation faces and aims to address with the project.

The project is in the definition/initiation phase and the organisation’s Project

Board has requested that you present the content of a Project Brief from the
project concept/start-up phase

Assignment Task 1 - Instructions

You are required to produce an individual narrated Powerpoint project pitch (with a
transcript of the narration) based around the content of a Project Brief which should
provide the initial foundations for the project from the project start-up/concept phase and
include:

slides which should be accompanied by a transcript of your narration of 2000 words

Assignment Task 1 - Instructions

• Select an organisation and potential project which provides you with access to good
quality information on which to base your Project Brief. Ideally this should be an
organisation and a potential project of which you are familiar
• If you do not have an organisation or project in mind then research some suitable possible
projects where you will have access to relevant project information
• You need to identify a potential future project so it could be just an idea for a project. You
will need to research and discuss your choice so that you choose wisely as it will be used
for both Assignment Tasks 1 and 2
• Assignment Task 1 comprises 40% of the overall module assessment weighting

Assignment Task 1 - Tips

• You will submit your Powerpoint presentation and narration transcript in Week 8 of the
module although you can submit a draft to your tutor for formative feedback 2 weeks
before the submission date
• You are free to layout the Powerpoint presentation how you wish but remember this is a
“pitch” so you should make it as attractive and convincing as you can
• The transcript however should be developed in Word, and the style required is as follows:
1.5 spacing, Trebuchet MS 12 point, fully justified text, page numbering centre bottom,
3cm space on all sides. Use bold and 14 point for headings.

Assignment Task 1 - Submission

You are required to submit as Assignment Task 2 - Project Initiation
Documentation (PID) of 3000 words

This task follows on from Assignment Task 1 and feedback provided to you
on that assignment should be used in developing your submission for
Assignment Task 2

Assignment Task 2 - Instructions

For Assignment Task 2, you are required to create Project Initiation Documentation (PID) of 3000 words for
three primary purposes:

1) To ensure there is a firm basis for the project before requesting project board approval for project delivery
2) To provide a baseline against which the ongoing project viability can be assessed
3) To provide a single source of reference for how the project will be managed and controlled

As a minimum your PID should include the following:

 Project definition PID

 Project approach
 Business case
 Project management team structure (including RACI Matrix)
 Communications approach (note – risk, configuration & quality management approaches are not required
for this assignment)
 Project Plan
 Project Controls

Assignment Task 2 - Instructions

You will submit your PID in Week 12 of the module although you can submit a
draft to your tutor for formative feedback 2 weeks before the submission date

Your PID should be developed in Word, and the style required is as follows: 1.5
spacing, Trebuchet MS 12 point, fully justified text, page numbering centre
bottom, 3cm space on all sides. Use bold and 14 point for headings.

Assignment Task 2 comprises 60% of the overall module assessment weighting.

Assignment Task 2 - Submission

• You will be basing your PID on the Project Brief you produced for Assignment Task 1 so it
relates to the same organisation and project
• Start developing a Storyboard for the PID as early as you can using the contents list that
has been provided. This will help you identify what research and work is needed
• Produce a day by day schedule for what you need to do working back from the
submission date
• Note: The Business Case and the Project Plan usually take the most time to produce
