one sentence function.”
Purpose of
Phrases ...
The main purpose of the existence of a phrase is
to provide an explanation or description.
Even though it consists of two or more words, a
phrase does not have a predicate and cannot be
a sentence. However, a phrase can be a subject,
a predicate, or any other element in a sentence.
Function of
Phrases ...
In a sentence, a phrase is
positioned as a syntactic function.
Syntactic functions are
better known as subject (S),
predicate (P), object (O),
complement (complementary), and
description.
For example, in a sentence
consisting of S-P-O, the phrase can
fill the sentence by working as a
subject, predicate, or object.
Definition of

Ball game is a game played by using a
ball.

express more nuanced action or condition.
