Research Proposal

The document presents a research proposal that aims to examine the impact of classroom environment, extrinsic motivation, and intrinsic motivation on students' academic performance. Specifically, it seeks to determine the classroom environment, motivation levels, and academic performance of grade 8 students. It also aims to establish relationships between these variables and identify the strongest predictor of academic performance. The study will use a descriptive survey design and questionnaires to collect data from a sample of 150 grade 8 students in San Nicolas National High School.

ENVIRONMENT, EXTRINSIC AND INTRINSIC
MOTIVATION ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE
A Thesis Proposal

INTRODUCTION
Classrooms are sometimes seen as a killer of student
interest rather than a developer. The type of classroom
environment that is made by teachers has been shown to
be particularly influential to the development of students'
academic performance. ( Bartell, 2017)

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION
Awan, Noureen & Nas (2013) stated that students’
motivation to learn in school is a topic of great concern
for educationist today and motivating students so that
they can succeed in school is one of the greatest
challenges of this century. Scholars typically recognize
two major types of motivation: Intrinsic and Extrinsic.

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION
The different opinion has been a debate for many articles
and has left the author of this research wondering which of
these factors affect the students’ performance. Moreover,
the main objective of the present study is to examine the
impact of classroom environment, extrinsic and intrinsic
motivation on students’ academic performance.

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

RESEARCH GAP
In education, motivation and classroom environment can
significantly impact students' performance and outcomes.
Thus, there is research conducted in international and
national but lack in local research.

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1.What is the classroom environment of grade 8 high
school students?
2.What is the level of motivation of high school students
(extrinsic, intrinsic)?

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
3.What is academic performance level of the students’?
4.Is there a significant relationship among classroom
environment, students’ motivation and academic
performance of the students?
5.Which variable best predicts students’ academic
performance?

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
Specifically, it aims to:
1.Describe the classroom environment of Grade 8 High
School students.
2.Determine the level of motivation of High School
students.

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
3.Ascertain academic performance level of the students’.
4.Establish the significant relationship among classroom
environment, students’ motivation and academic
performance
5.Recognize variable that best predicts students’
academic performance

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
❖ Teachers, It will help them to respond appropriately on this
issue.
❖ Parents, The results will be an eye-opener for parents to
participate in their children’s educational progress.
❖ Students, It will give the students a realization that there are
many factors that could affect their academic performance.
❖ Researcher, would attain profound knowledge regarding the
research.

SCOPE AND DE/LIMITATION
The scope of the study delimits on classroom physical
environment and organization and is incorporated with
the Social Cognitive Theory of Bandura (1986). And the
students’ motivation is delimited only to intrinsic and
extrinsic motivation.

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
McDaniels (2015) stated that a well-designed and organized
classroom can help to improve morale and success of the
student. When students feel that they are safe, secure, and
comfortable in their environment, they will be more willing to
participate and become actively engaged in their learning

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK
Both accounts of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation have made
an impact on students academic performance. Some scholars
argue that extrinsic motivation makes quick progress on
students, while intrinsic motivation builds learning in the long-
term aspect (El Massah & Fadly, 2017).

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
The present study is drawed on Bandura’s (1986) Social
Cognitive Theory, which construes human functioning as
a series reciprocal interactions between personal
environmental features (eg. classrooms).

METHODOLOGY

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

RESEARCH DESIGN
This study will use a descriptive correlation and survey
research designs. And researchers will apply the
standardized survey research design, since it will describe
the behavioral patterns of the respondents (with regards to
the analyzation of the survey questionnaire results) to
formulate a conclusion about the issue of the research.

RESEACRH SETTING
This study will be conducted in San Nicolas
National High School within the Municipality of
Don Carlos located at Purok-8 San Nicolas, Don
Carlos. The population of the study will cover all 5
High School rooms of the Grade 8.

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY
The total population of 242 (i.e. males 107; 135 females)
Grade 8 High School students at San Nicolas High School
will be chosen to be respondents of the study. The school
has 5 sections for Grade 8. And the number of the
respondents is determined using Slovin’s Formula.

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

SAMPLING PROCEDURE
Out of the total population of 242 Grade 8 students the
sample size will be 150 which will be divided into 5
sections. The sampling technique that will be used in the
study is simple random sampling procedure using lottery
where participants will pick from a bowl wherein names
of the present students on that day will be written.

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS
Information will obtained through giving standardized
survey questionnaires which is comprising of three sets:
classroom environment, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic
motivation. Both sets of questionnaires consist of 10
statements, 30 statements in total.

DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

DATA GATHERING
PROCEDURE
Researcher will draft a letter addressing to the principal for
approval in conducting the research. The research instrument
will be administer to the respondents and they will be inform
about the purpose of the research and that all information will
be keep confidential. After the questionnaires have
accomplish, the researchers will tally and tabulate the scores.
