Seminar: Presentation

The document discusses different types of operating systems. It begins by defining an operating system and providing a brief history of OS development. It then describes various OS types including single-user, multi-user, real-time, network, distributed, time-sharing, batch, multiprogramming, and multiprocessing operating systems. Specific examples are provided for each type. The conclusion emphasizes that operating systems are essential for interfacing with computer hardware and that different OS types are suited for various daily and official purposes.

• Operating System

• History of OS

• Functions OS

• Different types of Operating System.

• Conclusion
OPERATING SYSTEM
▪ OS (Operating System) is an
interface between an user and
computer hardware resources.
▪ Operating System is a manager of
the computer.
▪ Operating system is a multi-
purpose program or group of
program.
History of Operating System

▪ Earlier stage, Researchers and Scholars used to connecting

wires.
▪ Later, they used Magnetic Tapes or Punch Cards to record
all the documents or research works.
▪ Then, as the technology grows, the first OS has came to
spotlight which is used for real work was GM-NAA I/O,
produced in 1956 IBM launched the first OS by General
Motors' Research division by IBM.
▪ And Slowly, Windows came to spotlight and launched their
first OS, as MS- DOS (Disk Operating System).
▪ Also we see, LINUX, Mac OS and other updated versions
were came to those regular users in their PCs.
Function of Operating System

▪ Disk Management
▪ File Management
▪ Security
The rest function we will see in
the coming next side.
Different Types of Operating
System

▪ Single User OS- Single tasking OS & Multi tasking OS

▪ Multiuser OS
▪ Real-time OS
▪ Network OS
▪ Distributed OS
▪ Time Sharing OS
▪ Batch OS

▪ Multiprogramming OS and Multiprocessing OS

Single User Operating System

▪ Single User Operating System where only one

user can use at a time. For E.g.. – Windows 10,
Windows 7, etc.
▪ Single User Operating System can be divided into
two types- Single tasking OS and multi tasking
OS.
▪ Single tasking OS - can execute a single job at a
time.
▪ It is used on palm laptops, and in computer, MS
DOS.
Single User Operating System

▪ Multi-Tasking OS – Designed with a single user in

mind but can deal with many applications
running at the same time.
▪ Examples: MS Windows and Apple’s MAC OS
platforms.

Multitasking Operating
System
MS Windows 10 in Graphical
User Interface
Multiprogramming OS and
Multiprocessing OS

Multiprogramming OS, this OS runs two or more

programs are loaded into the internal storage of
CPU.
▪ It states, first program will load and execute it, and
then goes back to run the 2nd program and so on.
Multiprocessing OS, this OS capable of using and
managing more than one CPU.
▪ It will be fast, and run in high speed.
Multiuser Operating System

▪ In a Multiuser OS, multiple number of user can access

different resources of a computer at a same time.
▪ The access is provided using a network that consists of
various personal computers attached to a mainframe
computer.
▪ Advantages: It helps in the sharing of data and
information among different users.
▪ Disadvantages: It requires expensive hardware to
setup a mainframe computer.
▪ Example: LINUX, Windows 2000, Newell Netware,
etc.

Real-time Operating System

▪ A real-time operating system (RTOS) is a special-

purpose operating system used in computers that has
strict time constraints for any job to be performed.
▪ Advantages: Can handle heavy loads in a very small
amount of time.
▪ Disadvantages: If there is small error, then it can cause
heavy losses.
▪ Application: Defense System of Indian Army, Hospitals,
Airline traffic control systems , etc.
▪ Examples: RTLinux, VxWorks, etc.
Real Time Operating System
Network Operating System

▪ Network operating systems are very good for applications

that need shared access to files, security applications and
databases.
▪ Advantage: The servers can also be accessed from a remote
location, making it easier to work upon.
▪ Disadvantage: If the central server gets attacked it might
cause a lot of damage to data and business logic.
▪ Application: Bank Systems, Competitive Exams system, etc.
▪ Examples: LINUX, MS Windows Server 2008, Mac OS X, etc.
Network Operating System
Distributed Operating System

▪ In a distributed operating system, several

computers are connected to each other using a
common network.
▪ Advantage: If in any case, a system in the network
fails, there is no effect on the other systems.
▪ Disadvantage: If in any case, the central
distribution node fails the entire system fails.
▪ Application: Online banking, multiplayer online
gaming, Telecommunication networks
▪ Example: LOCUS, MICROS, etc.
Distributed Operating System

Time Sharing Operating System

▪ Time sharing OS allows the user to perform more

than one task at a time, each task getting the
same amount of time to execute.
▪ Advantage: Ensures that each task gets equal time
to get executed.
▪ Disadvantage: Problem of data communication
occurs.
▪ Application: Offices, Administrative work, etc.
▪ Example: Spectra 70/46, etc.
Time Sharing or Multitasking OS
Batch Operating System
▪ Batch processing is a technique in which an
Operating System collects the programs and data
together in a batch before processing starts
▪ Advantage: Large workloads can be easily handled.
▪ Disadvantage: The other jobs will have to wait for an
unknown time if any job fails.
▪ Application: Payroll Systems, Bank statements, etc.
▪ Examples: IBM’s MVS, etc.

Conclusion
Therefore We see some of the points in conclusion-
▪ Without Operating System, we can’t run our daily
PCs. Because OS has became a mediator
between Users and Computer System.
▪ Such OS, like Real Time OS, Batch OS, Network
OS, Distributed OS are those which used in Official
purpose.
▪ Such OS like Single User, Single Tasking OS, Multi
Tasking OS are those which used in our day to day
purpose.
