Index Laws

The document provides information on index laws and working with indices. It includes 4 learning objectives: 1) estimating answers involving indices, 2) multiplying terms with the same base, 3) dividing terms with the same base, and 4) simplifying terms with negative indices. The document then presents 5 laws of indices and provides examples of applying each law, such as adding/subtracting powers when multiplying/dividing terms with the same base. It concludes with more challenging examples involving negative indices and raising powers to other powers.

Law 1 : Multiplication
26 x 2 4 = 210
24 x 22 = 26
35 x 37 = 312
General Rule:

When multiplying terms with the same base, you

add the powers
EXAMPLE: 47 x 45 = 47+5 = 412
am x an = am+n
Index Laws
• How can I simplify 95 ÷ 93?
9x9x9x9x9

= 115
11 x 11
Law 2 : Division
26 ÷ 24 = 22
25 ÷ 22 = 23
35 ÷ 37 = 3-2
General Rule

When dividing terms with the same base, you

subtract the powers
EXAMPLE: 47 ÷ 45 = 47-5 = 42
am ÷ an = am-n
Division can also have a few steps….
Index Laws
