“The Necklace”
The Necklace was written by
Guy De Maupassant. He was a
French writer of short stories
and novels. His most notable
works are “The Ball of Fat”
and “The Necklace.”
Mathilde Loisel is described as
“pretty and charming.” She was
married off to a lowly clerk in the
Ministry of Education who can
afford to provide her only with a
modest though not
uncomfortable lifestyle.
One night, her husband
returns home proudly giving
her an invitation to a formal
party hosted by the Ministry
of Education. Her husband
thought she would be thrilled
to finally have the chance to
mingle with other people.
But instead, Loisel began to
cry.
Distraught by Loisel’s
reaction, her husband
gave her money to buy a
beautiful dress that she
could wear at the event.
Mathilde is still not
happy.
Her husband told her to go to
her friend Madame Forestier
to borrow some necklace.
Madame Forestier gladly
displayed her collection and
let her choose what necklace
she wants.
At the party, Madame Loisel
was the center of attention.
She dances and enjoys
herself. After a while, she
went looking for Monsieur
Loisel and accompanies him
to hail a cab.
When they finally returned home,
she removes her wrap and found
out that the necklace was missing.
She tried to trace her steps but
cannot find the necklace. Her
husband suggested that she write a
letter to Madame Forentier
indicating that she broke the clasp
and getting the necklace repaired.
They continue to look for the
necklace, without much success
Monsieur Loisel suggested that
they purchase a new one. They
saw one that is the same kind as
the necklace but it costs 40,000
francs, to which the seller decided
to give to them for 36,000 francs.
To purchase the necklace, The Loisels spent a week scrapping for money
and borrowing from some of their acquaintances. At last, they were able to
get the necklace. Madame Loisel immediately brought it back to Madam
Forestier who did not check to see if it is the same necklace she gave to
Madame Loisel.
Because of debt and the money they’ve used to buy the necklace. The
Loisels began to work extra hard. Monsieur Loisel works three jobs, while
Madame Loisel spent her time doing the heavy work. The misery lasts ten
years, but in the end, they were able to successfully pay all of their
financial debts.
When Mathilde and Madame
Forestier met again. She wasn’t
able to recognize her. Mathilde
explained about what happened to
the necklace, and the long hard
years she needs to endure to
replace it. At the end of the story,
however, it was revealed that the
necklace is an imitation and does
not worth anything.

Critique
Mathilde and her husband spent a fantastic time at the party. They left
the ball, and when they got home, Mathilde realized that she had lost the
necklace. The Loisels tried hard to find the necklace, however, when
they couldn’t find it they decided to replace it. They went deeply into
debt to purchase a replacement necklace. Mathilde took odd jobs, and
her husband even worked a second job at night to repay the loans.
Mathilde ages quickly during the ten years it took to pay back their
debts, and her appearance suffered greatly.
Shortly after paying all of their debts, Mathilde found out that the
necklace was just fake.
