What is Zen Buddhism?

• The term Zen is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the Middle
Chinese word (Chan) which traces its roots to the Indian practice of
Dhyana (“meditation”).
• Zen emphasizes rigorous self-control, meditation-practice, insight into
Buddha nature, and the personal expression of this insight in daily life ,
especially for the benefit of others.
What is the Philosophy of Zen?

The essential element of Zen Buddhism is found in its name, for


zen means “meditation”. Zen teaches that enlightenment is
achieved through the profound realization that one is already an
enlightened being.
To educate oneself means to find the true insight that
does not discriminate between failure and success,
wealth and poverty, and right or wrong. Hence, in Zen
Buddhism, the word education should mean finding
one’s undiscriminating mind. Finding one’s mind is a
form of Zen education.
CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHY
 It relates knowledge systematically.
 It strives for coherence, the formulation of a worldview.
 Its method is to consult information from the total experience.
The Biblical Base

• Bible
 The primary source for all learning
 Must be the vital part of the content of the curriculum and integrated with
all subject matter.
Purpose of Christian Philosophy of Education

 To develop biblical character in the lives of the students


(virtue).
 To secure for students the appropriate wealth of knowledge of
Christ.
CURRICULUM

• should be lively and appropriate to the needs of the learner, as


well as to the needs of the community as a whole.
• must be academically sound and based upon truth, not on
prejudiced or biased points of view.
• attain mastery of the subject within the context of a biblical
world view.
WHY TEACH?

• To love the Lord God with all their hearts.

• To become an effective believer.


• Discipline students to develop Christian lifestyle characteristics.
• Help the students to articulate the hope that lies within him/her.
WHAT TO TEACH?

• Virtue or moral maturity


• Knowledge or intellectual maturity
• Self-control or physical maturity
• Fortitude or emotional maturity
• Piety or spiritual maturity
• Kindness or social maturity
HOW TO TEACH?

• all procedures and processes must be based on a


definite theory of knowledge
The Implications for the Teaching-Learning Process

• process of guided learning where the teacher and the


Holy Spirit combine efforts to help the learner to
spiritually grow and mature, to more and more conform
to the image of Christ.
 seeks to develop the learner a worldview, a
perspective that enables him to understand,
appreciate, and live a Christian life in the world in
which God has placed him.
Who is Responsible for the Education of an
Individual?

Today, parents should see the church as being a coop in


religious education of their children.
The Role of a Teacher

 The teacher is a model of a Christian lifestyle (2 Tim. 3:14-17).


 The teacher is an instructor of truth (1 Tim. 1:3-4).
 The teacher is one who guides , facilitates and shapes learning.
Role of the Learner
“The pupil’s growth is determined not by what he hears
but by what he does about what he hears.”
Focus On the Learner

A learner is a real person. Teachers do not


teach lessons, they teach people.
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and
when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
- Proverbs 22:6
SARACEN PHILOSOPHY
What is Saracen?

Saracen was a term used in the early centuries, both in


Greek and Latin writings, to refer to the people who lived
in and near what was designated by the Romans as
Arabia Petraea and Arabia Deserta.
Saracenic Approach to Education

• The education of Saracen began with religious education


(Islam) and Quran was taught in all levels
• Saracenic Education aimed to search for knowledge and an
application of scientific facts.
• Liberal education in its truest sense.
Curriculum and Method of Education
 The curriculum of the Muslim school was the most complete
and most carefully organized in the elementary, secondary and
the higher levels.
 The teaching methods were scientific method, use repetition
and drill, catechetical, method, memorization and lecture.
Aims of the Saracenic Education

1. To search for knowledge and an application of scientific facts to daily life.


 Science was studied for intellectual exercise and application of useful arts
and crafts.
 Reading was studied for the preservation of life.
 Medicine was stressed for the preservation of life.
 Astronomy was studied as an aid to geography and navigation.
2. To develop the individual’s initiative and social welfare –
liberal education in its truest sense.
 There was no hierarchy among doctors, teachers and priest.
 There was very little need for education except for teachers of
divinity and philosophy.
 Education was free and gave more emphasis on the
improvement of life.
