Topic: Solve systems of linear equations in 3

Unknowns.

OBJECTIVE(S):
1. Solve systems of LE in 3 unknowns by
substitution or elimination.
Review:
1. What is the solution of the
(-2,0)
Lesson proper:
Linear equations can be extended to the case of 3 variables.
An equation of the form
where a, b, c and d are constants and a, b, and c are not all
equal to zero, is called a linear equation in x, y, z.
A solution of such equation is an ordered triple (x, y, z) that
satisfies the equation.
Thus, the ordered triple (3, 4, 2) is a solution of

because
As in the case of linear equation in two variables, a linear
equation in 3 variables has an infinite number of solutions.
The 2 algebraic methods (elimination and substitution) can
be used to solve the following system of linear equations in
x, y, and z.

A solution of such a system is an ordered triple (x, y, z)

whose values satisfy each of the equation in the system.
Solve the system
Example 1 by substitution.
Solution:
Step 1: In equation 1, solve for y.

Step 2: Substitute the value of y Step 3: Substitute the value of

in equation 2. y in equation 3.

(4) (5)
Step 4: Solve eq. (4) and (5)
Step 4: Solve eq. (4) and (5)

Step 5: Subtract 4 from 5 Therefore the solution of

the system is
Step 6: Substitute in (4) (1, 2,3)

Step 7: Substitute and in (3)

1
Solve
Examplethe system
2 by elimination.
Solution:
Step 1: Add equation 1 and 2
to eliminate y. Step 4: Add (4) and (6)
(4)
Step 2: Multiply eq. 2 by -2
(5)
Step 3: Add (3) and (5) Step 5: Subs. in eq. (4)

(6)
Step 6: Subs. and in eq. (1)
Step 6: Subs. and in eq. (1)

Therefore the solution of

the system is
(1, 2, 3)
Practice Exercises:

system is
(1, -2, -2)
