What Is A Final Drive?: Presentation by Howard Bellaby

The final drive consists of a hydraulic motor connected to a gearbox via a drive shaft. It enables machines to move forwards, backwards, and climb gradients. Oil is pumped into the motor under pressure, causing the swash plate and drive shaft to rotate. This rotation is translated into high torque by gears inside the gearbox, reducing the speed. The rotating gearbox case then turns the drive sprocket, engaging the track chain and propelling the machine.

What Is A Final Drive?

Presentation By Howard Bellaby

What does it do?

• The final drive makes the machine go backwards.

• It makes the machine go forwards.

• It enables the machine to climb gradients

What does a final drive consist of?

Motor
• It consists of a hydraulic motor and a gearbox.

• They are connected by a drive shaft and bolted

together.

Gear Box
How does it do it?

• Oil is fed from the machine’s hydraulic pump

through a hose into the motor side of the final

drive. normal blood
flow is about 300
litres per hour.

• The oil is fed under pressure ( measured in bar )

and at a flow rate measured in litres per minutes (
l/min).
Like water down a plughole…

• A measured amount of oil enters at speed and

under pressure into final drive’s motor and starts
to rotate – like water down a plughole

• The rotating action pushes against a plate. It starts

to rotate with the flow and is attached to a drive
shaft. The plate is called a swash plate.

portion of the final drive and turns them translating
Mathematically, torque
the shaft’s speedy rotation at low torque/high speed can be written as

into high torque/low speed. T = F * r * sin(theta)

and it has units of

Newton-meters.
Gearing up (or down)

Inside the gearbox, there are sets of gears

placed on top of each other.

The teeth on the gear sets are numbered in a

way to reduce one turn of the drive shaft into
a powerful amount of torque. This reduction
is known as the gearbox ratio e.g. 48 :1.
On the case…

The final set of gears engage with a gear ring on the inside of
the gearbox case and turn the case .

This rotating case is connected to a flange onto to which a drive

sprocket is bolted.

The drive sprocket teeth engage the bushes of the track chain
The chain moves and drives the machine forward or backwards.
