SUMMARY

Stone coated roofing sheets/tiles are an

upcoming construction material.

They are intended to be used as a better

alternative for roofing compared to the
previously used corrugated iron sheets or clay
roofing tiles.

In this presentation we discuss this roofing

product in order to give a better understanding.

MATERIALS USED AND THE PROCESS.

4
• Stone-coated roofing sheets are made by combining
different materials to create a durable, weather-
resistant, and aesthetically appealing roofing option.

• Here is a step-by-step breakdown of the production

STONE-COATED ROOF SHEETS

process for stone-coated roofing sheets:

1. Cutting and shaping of the metal core

2. Galvanization and alloy coating

3. Application of the adhesive layer

4. Application of stone chips

5. Curing and finishing

5
The roofing sheets can be divided into 8 layers. These
8 layers are: ( top to bottom)
 Layer 1: Clear Acrylic Overglaze
 Layer 2: Natural Stone Coating
 Layer 3: Base coat
 Layer 4: Acrylic Resin Protective Coat
 Layer 5: Zinc – Aluminum layer
 Layer 6: Steel Base layer

PROS & CONS
PROS
1. They are lighter. (compared to clay tiles)
2. Easier to install
3. Different designs and colors offer variety.
4. Durability and strength
5. Little to no maintenance

PRESENTATION TITLE
6. Safe for water harvesting.
7. Fire resistance

CONS
1. Relatively expensive
2. Susceptible to rain noise
3. Requires special accessories for installation which increases the
cost.

FIXING AND
INSTALLATION
Stone-coated roofing tiles are typically installed by following
these general steps
i. Preparation
ii. Underlayment
iii. Battens

PRESENTATION TITLE
iv. Flashing
v. Tile installation
vi. Finishing
Stone coated tiles should be installed on a minimum pitch of 18
degrees to prevent the ‘ponding’ of water during the rainy season.
It is also recommended that the roofs be higher than 25 degrees

HOW IT’S SHOWN UNDER
CONSTRUCTION
Plain tiling: Made with a small upward camber l, so that when
laud overlapping, the tail of a tile bears directly on the back of
a tile below.
Roof boarding: Also called sarking. Acts to brace a pitcher
roof against inherent instability across slopes.
Ridge: Half round and segmented ridge tiles are made for use
in lower pitch roofs and the angle and hog back ridge tiles for

more steeply pitched roofs
Hip ends : Manufactured to bond in with the courses of tile in
adjacent slope to provide a more pleasant appearance to the
roof. Each side of the hip are cur to fit the angle of the junction
of the main slope and the hip end slope.
Single lap tiling: In this method, each tile us laid to end lap
the tile below down the slope of a roof and to side lap over and
under the tiles next to it, in every course of tiles

ACCESSORIES USED

16 PRESENTATION TITLE
ACCESSORIES USED
The Ridge
Installed at the ridge-line
Made out of the same material as the roof tiles
Installed by overlapping it with the tiles that are in direct contact to prevent
rainwater from seeping into the roof.
Overall length of 2 metres and weighs 2kg’s per ridge
Price is Ksh.850/ridge

PRESENTATION TITLE
The Box Barge Cover
Installed to protect the barge board of both the roof and the wall.
Also gives the installation a nice finish
Flushes with the fascia board
Slight;y bent increasing its rigidity.
Length of 2m and weight of about 2.5kgs
Price of Ksh. 850/cover.

17
ACCESSORIES USED
The Valley Tray
Usually installed to bridge the gap left between two roofs which are facing
different directions
It functions to channel water that runs of the adjacent roofs into the gutter.
Overall length of 2.4m and weighs about 2.5kgs
Price of Ksh. 850/ valley

PRESENTATION TITLE
Side Flashing
These are element installed between the roof and the wall to protect it from
water damage as well as leakage from the roof to the wall.
Weighs about 1.4kgs and has a length of 2 metres
May also be screwed onto the fascia boards located on the roof. These are
referred to as eave flashing.
Price of Ksh . 850

18
ACCESSORIES USED
Roofing Screws
The nails and screws specifically used to secure tiles on roof frames/trusses are
serrated and durable.
They are designed in specific sizes which fit its use and have corrosion resistant
properties that prevent rusting.
Cost about Ksh. 850 – 900 per kg which is evidently more expensive than
regular nails

PRESENTATION TITLE
Touch up kit
This kit is used to ensure the roof has a seamless and uniform look once the
installation is done.
It contains stone chips that match the stone type of the roof tiles and strong
adhesive.
Price – Ksh. 850
