Introduction Sunflower
• When someone says "Sunflower", you automatically think of the beauty of
a whole field, yellow, which walks according to the position of the sun... a
tonic and optimistic flower, which grows easily, loving the sun, the light,
like a person who sees always the good side of life...

• The sunflower is one of the most widespread oleaceous plants in our


country. From its seeds, an oil is obtained that is widely distributed both in
Romania and abroad.

• The plant represents one of the main sources of vegetable fats, used in
human nutrition, respectively the most important source of oil for
Romania.
Etymology

• The sunflower is part of the order


Compositales (Asterales), family
Compositae (Asteraceae),
subfamily Tubuliflorae, tribe
Heliantheae, subtribe
Helianthinae, genus Helianthus1
L. It is native to Central and
North America and spread
throughout the globe especially
for obtaining oil. It is a plant that
is cultivated on large areas in our
country, especially in Dobrogea,
the Romanian and Western Plains.
Composition of sunflower oil

In a spoonful of sunflower oil are:

120 calories;
78 grams of fat;
vitamin E;
vitamin K. (2)
Sunflower oils do not contain proteins, carbohydrates, cholesterol or sodium.
A tablespoon or about 15 ml of sunflower oil high in linoleic acid has:120
calories;14 grams of fat in total.
The same amount of oil rich in oleic acid has the same components, with the
mention that sunflower oil with more oleic acid is richer in monosaturated fats
and lower in polysaturated fats.

Uses of sunflower oil
• Sunflower oil can be used in the culinary field, for cooking,
baking, frying food, because the available options allow
performing procedures at different temperatures, which gives
food a special taste, but also the possibility of preparing food
in new ways.
• Maybe you didn't know, but sunflower oil is also used in the
cosmetics industry, due to its role as a humectant and
emollient for the skin.
• Applied directly to the skin to provide elasticity and protection
to a dry epidermis, the oil should not be used for a long period
of time.

Benefits
• Some studies have shown that a diet rich in monosaturated fatty
acids, such as oleic acid, can reduce high cholesterol levels, thus

is nutritious, antioxidant, tonic, regenerating, anti-infective and
detoxifying, effective in treating respiratory diseases - bronchitis,
menstrual cycle disorders, headache and toothache, joint diseases-
rheumatism, infectious eczema, heart conditions, renal and
gynecological diseases.

• Consuming the oil extracted from sunflower seeds or using it as a


carrier/base oil in aromatherapy and massage
Contraindications
• Sunflower seeds can be an allergic factor for some people, causing allergic
rhinitis, skin allergies or asthmatic symptoms.
• However, sunflower seed oil was not shown to have the same effect on the
same study group. If you are allergic to these seeds, however, it is
recommended to be cautious about the consumption of sunflower oil and, in
case of adverse effects, consult your doctor immediately.
• Moderate consumption of sunflower seed oil is recommended.
• Exceeding the recommended daily dose may increase blood glucose levels and
the amount of insulin secreted, especially in people with diabetes. It can also
increase blood fat levels.
Conclusions
• Sunflower oil is considered safe for consumption and to be used on the
skin, all in moderation.
• Sunflower has a wide range of uses, the whole plant can be used. The
demand for sunflower oil is high, and the technology of its cultivation is
fully mechanized, so it does not raise any problems for the grower.
• Sunflower oil is the vegetable oil with the highest vitamin E content. It
contains mainly unsaturated fatty acids, also considered "good fats", as
well as an increased amount of vitamin K.
• Moderation is necessary, and balance in the diet is essential for a better
state.
• Crude sunflower oil is yellow in color with a specific taste and smell; if the
oil comes from hot or moldy seeds, then it has a high acidity, a rancid
smell and a bitter taste.
• Sunflower oil serves primarily as an edible oil . In small quantities it is also
used for the manufacture of soap, oxidized and polymerized oils as well as
thick fats.
