Maths - Year 7 (Reflection)

The document discusses reflection, which is a transformation that flips a shape across a mirror line so that the left and right sides are exact mirrors of each other. It defines reflection and mirror lines, and explains that corresponding points of the shape and reflection are the same distance from the mirror line. The document provides examples of reflecting shapes on the x-axis and y-axis, and notes that reflecting on the x-axis causes the y-coordinate to change sign, while reflecting on the y-axis causes the x-coordinate to change sign.

Reflection

Year 7
Lesson Outcomes
• After this lesson, students will be able to,
• Identify reflection
• Recognize mirror line
• Understand ways of reflecting figures on both axis and the diagonal
• Observe coordinates changing signs to reflect on both axis
• Figure out how to reflect on x–axis and y-axis
What is Reflection
Common Examples of Reflections
Important To Remember
• Reflection is,
• Transformation that flips a shape in a mirror line, such that in the image left side is the same as right
hand side and right hand side is same as left hand side, OR top side is same as bottom and bottom
side is same as top side.
• Mirror line is,
• A line that can be drawn onto a shape to show that both sides have exact reflective symmetry.
• It can be along vertical (y - axis), horizontal (x – axis), and diagonal.
• In the Shape and Image,
• Each corresponding point is at the same distance from the mirror line.
Exercise 17 B1
Which is the correct reflection?

Reflection App (Make Shapes Reflect on Both Axis)

Reflection on X - axis

(-3,2)
(1,1)
(-1,0)
(-1,0)

(1,-1)
(-3,-2)

(-2,-3) (1,-3)
Reflection on Y - axis

(2,0) (-2,0)

(0,-1) (0,-1)
(2,-2) (4,-2) (-4,-2) (-2,-2)
(2,-3) (-2,-3)

(1,-4) (4,-4) (-1,-4)

(-4,-4)
Three Important Points
• Every reflection has a mirror line
• Shape and its reflection is at equal distance from mirror line

• When reflecting on x axis then y coordinate (For example (3, 5)) changes sign, and when
reflecting on y axis the x coordinate (For example (5,4)) changes sign.

• (a, b) reflected in x – axis will become (a, -b)

• (a, b) reflected in y – axis will become (-a, b )

Task Sheet
Summary
• Every reflection has a mirror line
• Shape and its reflection is at equal distance from mirror line
• When reflecting on x axis then y coordinate (For example (3, 5)) changes sign, and when
reflecting on y axis the x coordinate (For example (5,4)) changes sign.
Next Lesson
• In the next lesson we shall learn about lines of symmetry
