Week 5: Lesson 9 & 10
Introduction
This chapter identifies the challenges associated with knowledge management, provides
guidance to overcome these challenges, presents best practices for selling and
implementing a successful knowledge management project, and outlines various
technologies that support knowledge management. We begin with a definition of
knowledge management and identify several knowledge management applications and
their associated benefits. Expert systems are then discussed followed by artificial
intelligence and its applications.
Overview
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been in development for more than sixty years. During this
time, advances in AI technology have affected our daily lives—both at home and in
business. What is artificial intelligence, and how does a computer become intelligent?
What types of careers are available, and what do you need to be successful in an AI field?
We need to understand how automation will affect each industry and how to prepare for
it. Will jobs be lost due to automation, or will new jobs be created? As we look to the
future, it is important for organizations and managers to understand artificial intelligence
and automation and their applications, including how these fields will continue to
develop.
What will be covered
in these lessons?
What is Knowledge Management (KM)?
Lesson 9 Project
1 Explain what expert systems are, include practical examples in your explanation.
2. AI research has focused on developing machines with the ability to “learn” from experiences
and apply knowledge acquired from those experiences; handle complex situations; solve
problems; determine what is important and react quickly; understand visual images, process and
manipulate symbols, and be creative and imaginative; and use heuristics—all of which together
is considered _____. Answer:
3. Which part of the expert system seeks information and relationships from the knowledge base
and provides answers, predictions, and suggestions, often taking the place of the human experts?
a. inference engine
b. development engine
c. knowledge base
