circular vegetable garden which has a
diameter of 4 meters. How many meters
did he plant with tomatoes?

Ask the following questions:

What is asked? The number of meters
Mr. Jose planted with tomatoes.
 What are given? 4 meters (diameter of
a circular vegetable garden)
 How will you solve the problem?
Multiplication
 What is the formula in finding the
circumference of a circle? C= d or C=2 r
Circumference is the distance around of
a circle.
To find the circumference, use Pi ,a
mathematical constant. Its value is 3.14. It is
the ratio of circumference of a circle to its
diameter.

(Multiplication is the inverse of division)

so C = x d (if diameter is given)

or C = 2 r (if radius is given)

Now, let’s find the circumference, multiply
the diameter by 3.14.
If radius is given use this formula,
C = 2 r (whereas, radius is one-half
of a diameter) Given: 2 meters
radius

Nadine is making a circular table cloth. It
has a diameter of 5 centimetres. How
many centimetres of lace are needed to
decorate the sides of the table cloth?
What kind of a problem is this? Routine
Problem Why did you say so that this is a
routine problem?
A Routine Problem is
a type of problem
which there is an
immediate solution.
Let us analyse and solve the problem.

Here are the steps:
1. Understand What is asked in the problem?
= The number of lace needed to decorate the
sides of the table cloth.
What are the given facts?
= a diameter of 5 centimeters

2. Plan What will you do to answer the problem?

Choose a formula. C = d (Use this formula since
the diameter is given)
3. Solve Show the solution. C = d
where: diameter is 5 centimeters = 3.14 x 5 cm =
15.70 cm 4.
Check Verify if the answer is correct. Use the formula
for the circumference when the radius is given.

Note: Radius is one half of a diameter. C = 2 r = (2 x
3.14) x 2.5 cm = 6.28 x 2.5 cm = 15.70 cm

Therefore, Nadine needs 15.70 cm of lace to
decorate the sides of the table cloth.

Peter jogs around a circular park
with a radius of 25 meters. What
is the distance covered by Peter if
he jogs around the park two
times? If he jogs 500 meters
around the park, will he be able to
complete 3 rounds?
This is an example of Non-Routine
Problem. A Non-Routine Problem is a
complex problem that requires some
degree of creativity or originality to solve.
Non-routine problems typically do not
have an immediately apparent strategy
for solving them. Often times, these
problems can be solved in multiple ways.
Let us analyse and solve the problem.
Here are the steps:
1. Understand
What is asked in the problem?
= The distance covered by Peter in
jogging around the park two times or
twice.
What are the given facts?
= a radius of 25 meters, 500 meters
2. Plan What will you do to answer the
problem?
= Choose a formula. C = 2 r
(To get the circumference, use this
formula, if the radius is given) What
processes are involved? multiplication
and subtraction.
3. Solve Show the solution. C = 2 r where:
radius is 25 meters.

157 m is the distance around the park.

To find the distance covered by Peter jogs is

to multiply the distance around the park,
twice.
The distance covered by Peter jogs around the
park, twice, is 314 m.
Now, to know if Peter will be able to complete 3
rounds. First, find the distance of the park thrice.
= 157 m x 3 = 471 m 471 m to complete 3 rounds.
Then, subtract the product from 500 meters.
= 500 m – 471 m
= 29 m
Therefore, If Peter jogs 500 meters around the
park, he was able to complete 3 rounds which is
only 471 m.
4. Check Verify if the answer is correct. Use the
formula for the circumference when the diameter is
given.
Note: Diameter is twice of a radius. Where, radius is
25 m.
C = d = 3.14 x 50 m = 157 m 157 m is one complete
round in the park.
Let’s look back, if 3 complete rounds are 471 m,
where 1 complete round is 157 m.
Note: Division is the inverse of Multiplication.
= 471 m ÷ 157 m = 3 (This means, 3 complete
rounds) Therefore, the answer is correct.
Directions: Read and analyse the
problem, then answer the following
questions.
