Solving Systems of Linear Equations: A Short Explanation

This document provides an overview of solving systems of linear equations. It discusses identifying the solutions, finding x-intercepts and y-intercepts, and solving systems by graphing and substitution. Specifically, it defines a solution to a system as a point that satisfies both equations. It also explains how to verify a solution by substituting the coordinates into the equations and checking if it is true. Graphing methods are outlined as finding intercepts of each equation and locating their intersection point. Substitution is described as solving one equation for one variable in terms of the other and substituting it into the remaining equation.

Identifying The Solutions For A
System Of Linear Equations

 The solution to a system of linear equations is a

point that satisfies both equations.

 To find the unique solution to a system of linear

equations, we must find a numerical value for
each variable in the system that will satisfy
all equations in the system at the same time.

 Note: If an ordered pair does not satisfy the first

equation, we can immediately conclude that
the ordered pair is not a solution to the system.
2x + y = 15 In this example, the ordered pair (4, 7) is
(4,7); { 3x – y = 5 the solution to the system.

  2x + y = 15     3x – y = 5
To verify that an ordered pair is a
solution to a system of Linear • 2(4) + (7)= 15   • 3(4) − (7)= 5
Equations, we can substitute • 8 + 7 = 15 • 12 – 7 = 5
each variable in the equations with • 15 = 15 True • 5 = 5 True
the values from the ordered pair to
see if the ordered pair satisfies both
(4,7) is the solution to this
equations.
system because it satisfies both
equations.
Finding x-intercepts and y-intercepts
To find the x-intercept, set y = 0

To find the y-intercept, set x = 0

(
2x + y = -8
Example: {x – y = -1

To solve a system of linear

equations by graphing, find the
x-intercept and y-intercept of (-4, 0)
each equation in the system y-intercept:-
and graph the points on a x – y = -1
y-intercept:-
coordinate plane. 0 – y = -1
The point in which both y = -8 -y(-1) = -1(-1)
lines intersect is the result. y=1
(0, 1)
2x + y = -8
The Graph Of The System { x – y = -1

(-3, -2) is the solution of the system

because it is the point in which both
lines intersect.
Solving a System of Linear Equations by Substitution
 First, solve one linear equation for y in terms of x.

3x + 2y = 16
{
7x + y = 19
 Then substitute that expression for y in the other linear equation.
 Then substitute x to either equation to find the y -coordinate.

7x + y = 19

y = 19 - 7x

y =19 -7(2)

y = 19 - 14

y=5

The solution is (2, 5) because x was equal to 2 in the previous equation

and y = 5 in the equation we substituted x in.
