One great Greek
geometer named
Apollonius of Perga
studied the curves formed
by the intersection of a
plane and a double right
circular (napped) cone. By
changing the angle and
location of the intersection
of a plane and a double
right cone it will tells us
the different types of
conics.

Three – Dimensional Definition of Conic
A conic section or conic is a curve formed by the
intersection of a plane and a double right circular cone. By
changing the angle and location of the intersection it will produce
different types of conics such as circle, parabola, ellipse and
hyperbola.
Remember that the historical description of conics
involves three dimensional illustrations.
Eccentricity (e) – the constant ratio, e = /FP/
/QP/
Where: e = 1 the conic is parabola, e < 1 the conic is ellipse, e >1 the conic is hyperbola
e = 0 the conic is circle

Any conic section has second-degree equation in x and y and it
can be written in the form of Ax2 + Bxy + Cy2 + Dx + Ey + F = 0.
Is the graph of this general second – degree always a conic
section?
If the equation is given, how will you distinguish this equation
as parabola, circle, ellipse or hyperbola?

Analyze an Equation of a Conic Section

A. Without writing the equation in standard form,

state whether the graph of 3y2 – x2 – 9 = 0 is a
parabola, circle, ellipse, or hyperbola.

A = –1, B = 0, and C = 3

The discriminant is 02 – 4 (–1) (3) or 12. Since the

discriminant is greater than 0, the conic is a hyperbola.

Answer: hyperbola

B. Without writing the equation in standard form,

state whether the graph of 2x2 + 2y2 + 16x – 20y = –32
is a parabola, circle, ellipse, or hyperbola.

A = 2, B = 0, and C = 2

Since A = C, the graph is a circle.

Answer: circle

C. Without writing the equation in standard form,

state whether the graph of y2 – 2x – 4y + 10 = 0 is a
parabola, circle, ellipse, or hyperbola.

A = 0, B = 0, and C = 1

The discriminant is 02 – 4(0)(1) or 0. Because the

discriminant equals 0, the conic is a parabola.

Answer: parabola
