statement or condensed
version of what a
selection, a story, or a
book is about.
Writing the Summary of a Narrative
1. Give the main point of the original text
2. Restate in your own words
3. Keep in mind the elements of the
narrative/story: Who refers to the
characters; Where and when to the setting;
and Why and how to the plot or series of
events from the beginning, middle, and end.

Summarizing an Explanation
A summary is a brief statement or
condensed version of a selection.

Summarizing is a way of understanding


a text by identifying the main idea and
its
important supporting information
Explanation - is a text type that tells how or why things or
events work or happen.

Explanation includes a sequence of events (explaining


how) and provides reasons for a process (why). It also
includes:
(1) a general statement of the event or happening;
(2) a series of statements that describe the ‘how’ or ‘why’
of the event or happening;
(3)a concluding statement that sums up the explanation.
