Dunkerley'S Method of Approximation To Findout The Natural Frequency of Multi Degree Freedom System

Dunkerley's method provides an approximation for finding the natural frequency of multi-degree of freedom systems. It uses the flexibility matrix to find a lower bound on the fundamental frequency. For a lumped-mass system with a diagonal mass matrix, the fundamental frequency can be estimated from the flexibility coefficients and masses of the system. Considering a three degree of freedom or three storey building as an example, the flexibility coefficients are calculated for different assumptions about the masses to then determine the fundamental frequency.

Dunkerley’s method

• Finding approximate fundamental frequency

• Use flexibility matrix

• Lower bound method

Derivation -
o Higher natural frequencies of most vibratory systems are large compared to their fundamental frequencies

Consider a general n-degree-of-freedom system

} +[k]{x} = {0} --------------( 1)

Assuming x = A*sin(t+ Φ)
Solving,
- m]{A} + [k]{A} = {0} ---------------( 2)

Premultiplying with and solving

-m]{A} + [k]{A} = 0 [𝑘]− 1=[𝑎]( 𝑓𝑙𝑒𝑥𝑖𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑥 )

( [m][a] - ){A} = 0 ---------------( 3)

So knowing flexibility coefficients and masses we can find the value of fundamental frequency
