Linear Function

This document defines and provides examples of linear functions. It explains that a linear function can be written as f(x)=mx+b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. The document gives examples of linear functions and non-linear functions. It also provides information on how to find the slope, intercepts, table of values, graph, domain and range for a given linear function like f(x)=-2x+4. Finally, it poses a problem asking the reader to find these components for the function f(x)=2x+1.

LINEAR FUNCTION
A LINEAR FUNCTION is a function that can be
written in the form
f(x) = mx + b
Where m and b are real numbers
Where m tells us the slope of a line and b tells us
where the graph crosses the y axis.
LINEAR FUNCTION
f(x) = mx + b
A LINEAR FUNCTION is a function whose
graph is a straight line. Its equation can be
written in the form y = mx + b where x and
y are used for the independent and
dependent variables respectively, m ≠ 0 .
LINEAR FUNCTION
f(x) = mx + b
y = mx + b
y=f(x) f(x) means “the value of x”
g(x) or h(x) Letters other than f such as
G and H, or g and h can also
be used.
LINEAR FUNCTION as an EQUATION
Which of the following function is linear?
1. y = 8x - 5 LINEAR FUNCTION. It is in the form y- mx + b

2. y = - + 2 LINEAR FUNCTION. By rewriting the

equation, we can have y = - + 2

3. y = x LINEAR FUNCTION. By rewriting the

equation, we can have y = + 0
LINEAR FUNCTION as an EQUATION
Which of the following function is linear?

4. y = + 7 Not a LINEAR FUNCTION. It cannot be

expressed in the form y=mx+b because x is in
the denominator.
5. y = Not a LINEAR FUNCTION. The degree of the
equation is on the second degree.
A LINEAR FUNCTION can
be described using graph,
table of values and slope.
