READINGS IN THE PHILIPPINE HISTORY
ANTONIO PIGAFETTA (1491-1531)
 ASTRONOMY, GEOGRAPHY, AND
CARTOGRAPHY

 Italian scholar and explorer from the Republic of

Venice

 travelled with portuguese explorer Ferdinand

Magellan and his crew on their First Voyage
around the world.

 One of the eighteen survivors who returned to Spain

aboard the "Victoria" and therefore considered as an
eyewitness of the significant events happened on the
FIRST MASS.
 The first Catholic Mass was celebrated on March 31, 1521 ,an Easter Sunday.
Pigafetta referred to the evenue as “MAZAUA”
 It was conducted by Spanish friar Pedro de Valderrama of
Ferdinand Magellan's expedition along the shores of “MAZAUA”

 The Holy first Mass marked the birth of Roman Catholicism in the
Philippines.

 Located at the Southern Leyte, popularly known as the birthplace of the church
in the philippines.
CONTROVERSIES BETWEEN
LIMASAWA AND MASAO /BUTUAN
WHERE EXACTLY IS MAZAUA LOCATED?

R.A. No. 2733 declared Barangay

Magallanes in Limasawa, Southern Leyte as
the site of the First Mass
.

memorial o the site. Mass was removed.

 The name of the place is “Mazaua”. Limasawa has four (4) syllables and begins with another letter.
 The expedition travelled to 20-25 leagues from Homonhon. If they had been to Limasawa island, the distance only is
14.6 leagues.
 Distance to Cebu from Mazaua according to Pigafetta was 35 leagues (140 miles). Limasawa to Cebu is only 80 miles.
 The king came to their ship in “balangai”. Butuan is now the site of atleast nine excavated balangai relics.
 The western explorers got excited at the abundance of gold in Mazaua, for that main currency at that time.
LIMASAWA
• Jaime de Veyra former governor of Leyte- “the first Mass was celebrated in Limasawa, not in Butuan”

• According to Historian Pablo Pastells’ footnote to Francisco Colins’ Labor Evangelica

“Magellan did not go to Butuan but from Limasawa to Cebu.”

• James Robertson concurred with Pastells in a footnote that "Mazua" was actually Limasawa.

• Francisco Albo, pilot of Magellan's flagship didn’t mention the first Mass, but he writes that they erected a cross on a
mountain that overlooked the islands in the west, and the southwest.

•Antonio Pigafetta and Fransisco Albo, as Magellan Witnesses, claimed that the first mass was held on the Island
of Mazaua (MASAWA)

• Fr. Bernard studied all the Pigafetta's maps, which place in Mazau off the southern tip of the larger island of Leyte, a
check with the modern maps will show that this jibes with Limasawa and not in Masao or Butuan.
