Paper 1 – Non-Fiction: Section B (Writing)
For this paper, you will be asked to write a text based on a non-fictional
topic. In recent years, students have been asked to write a:
• letter;
• recount;
• opinion essay;
• review.
However, you may be asked to write a speech or a newspaper report.
This PPT will help you revise the techniques for each style of writing.
Speech
How would you structure a speech?
What writing techniques can you use in a speech?
How does a letter differ from a speech?
Read the model speech.
What is the purpose of the speech? How do I achieve this purpose?
Complete the tasks underneath.
Letter
What do you expect to see in a letter?
When would you use the phrase ‘Yours sincerely’ instead of ‘Yours
faithfully’?
Read the model letter. How has the letter been organised?
What is the purpose of the letter? How does this differ from the
purpose of the speech? How has that affected the style of the letter?
Newspaper Report
What do you expect to find in a newspaper report?
Look at the list of techniques on the hand-out. Research and write
down the definition of each technique.
Find a newspaper report online and identify as many techniques as you
can.
What makes a good headline and why?
How do verb tenses change between the main body of a report and the
end of a report?
Review
What is the purpose of a review?

Read one of the example reviews and discuss whether it is effective and why.
Consider how a review might be similar or differ for any of the following:
• museum;
• country / city;
• film.
Recount
What is a recount?
What do you expect to find in a recount?
The PPT has activities relating to a blog entry that is a recount of a food
experience. Use this to revise and practise writing a recount. You could
choose to begin from slide 12.
Opinion Essay
What do you think would make a good opinion essay?
How can you write a balanced essay?
How would you structure your essay to highlight YOUR opinion?
How would an opinion essay differ from a recount, speech or letter?
