The document discusses probability distributions of discrete random variables. A probability distribution shows the possible values of a random variable and the probabilities associated with each value. Discrete random variables can take on countable values like integers or a finite set of values. The document provides examples of constructing probability distributions by listing outcomes, determining values of the random variable in each outcome, compiling these into a frequency distribution, and calculating the probability of each value occurring. It describes steps for students to practice finding probability distributions.

Probability Distribution of
Discrete Random Variable
Probability Distribution
A probability distribution is a frequency
distribution of the values of the random
variable with the probability that each value of the random variable will occur. Discrete Random Variables
A discrete random variable is a random
variable that has either finite or a countable number of values
A finite number of values such as 0,1, 2, 3 and 4
A countable numbers of values 1, 2, 3, ….
OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, learners are able to:
1. define probability distribution of discrete random variable;
2. familiarize themselves with the steps in constructing probability distribution of discrete random variable; 3. appreciate the importance of probability distribution of discrete random variable by relating it to real life situation; and 4. construct probability distribution of discrete random variable. Example A box contains 10 twenty-peso bill and 4 hundred- peso bill. If three bills are drawn one after the other, determine the possible values of the random variable H representing the number of hundred-peso bills.
STEPS SOLUTION
1. List the sample space __, __, __, __
2. Count the number of Outcome Number of Hundred-
hundred-peso bill (H) in Peso Bill (H) each outcome and assign this number to this outcome Number of Number of Hundred-Peso Bill Occurrence 3. Construct the frequency (Value of H) (frequency) distribution of the values of the random variable (H)
4. Construct the probability
Number of Number of distribution of therandom Hundred-Peso Bill Occurrence Probability P(H) variable H by getting the (Value of H) (frequency) probability of occurrence of each value of the random variable. Activity
Form a group of 15 members. Ask each
member to give the number of siblings that they have. Let S be the number of siblings.
a.Construct the probability distribution
of the random variable S. Direction: Complete the table below by constructing and illustrating the probability distribution of the given problem 1. Two balls are drawn in succession without replacement from an urn containing 5 orange balls and 6 violet balls. Let V be the random variable representing the number of violet balls. Find the values of the random variable V.
STEPS SOLUTION
1. List the sample space
2. Count the number of violet balls in each outcome and assign this number to this outcome.
3. Construct the frequency distribution of the
values of the given random variable.
4. Construct the probability distribution of the given
random variable by getting the probability of occurrence of each value of the random variable.
