LAW OF SINES

What’s an Oblique Triangle?

• Oblique triangle is a triangle which does not contain any right
angle. It can be classified into two – ACUTE and OBTUSE
triangle.
Law of Sines
Question: When can we use Law of Sines?
Law of Sines can be use when:
a. Two angles and one side are given (Angle – Angle - Side or Angle
-Side - Angle)
b. Two sides and an angle opposite one of these sides (Side – Side -
Angle )
Law of Sines
A formula is given for Law of Sines:
Example 1:
Let’s find the third angle or Angle
C. Remember to solve for the third
The given below are two sides angle, the sum of the interior

parts of triangle. Therefore,
Solution:
∠A + ∠B + ∠C = 180˚
93˚+ 58˚+ ∠C = 180˚
151˚+ ∠C = 180˚
∠C = 180˚– 151˚
∠C = 29˚

which one you would like to solve first.)
Let’s solve for a:

and an angle. Solve for the Substitute the given
parts of triangle. Solve for sin 58˚and sin
29˚
0.4848c = 13.568 Cross multiply
Divide by 0.4848
c = 27.99 Round off to nearest
hundreths

the parts of triangle. given
Solve for sin 88˚
26Sin C = 20.9874 Cross multiply
Divide by 26
= 0.8072 Using your
scientific
calculator, press
Shift + Sin 0.8072
C = 53.82˚
Example 2:
The given below are two angles Now we have the second angle, let’s
and an opposite side. Solve for solve for the third angle or B:
the parts of triangle. Solution:
∠A + ∠B + ∠C = 180˚
88˚+ ∠B + 53.82 = 180˚
141.82˚+ ∠B = 180˚
∠B = 180˚– 141.82˚
∠B = 38.18˚
53.82˚

AMBIGOUS CASE
There are three results can be formed in our oblique triangle: you
can form one triangle, two triangles or no triangle at all.
Examples:
Identify how many triangles will form:
One, two or none.
1. B = 29,̊ a = 14, b =19
Since B is acute:
h = b sinB
h = 14(sin 29)
h = 14(0.4848)
h = 9.21

Therefore, h <a<b
9.21<14<19
There are two triangles.
Examples:
Identify how many triangles will form:
One, two or none.
2. B = 95,̊ b = 24, c =5
Since B is obtuse:

Therefore, b > c
25<5
No triangle formed.
Examples:
Identify how many triangles will form:
One, two or none.
3. B = 33,̊ a = 27, b =22
Since B is acute:
h = b sinB
h = 22(sin 33)
h = 22(0.9999)
h = 22

Therefore, b = h
22=22
Only one triangle formed.
