Definition Of Poetry
Definition of poetry based on expert:
1. Poetry according to Matthew Arnold: poetry is “simply the most delightful and perfect
form of utterance that human words can reach”; It is, “a criticism of life under the
conditions fixed for such a criticism by the laws of poetic truth and poetic beauty.”
2. Poetry according to Paul Valery, Poetry is an art based on language, but poetry has
more general meaning that is difficult to define because it is less determine; poetry also
expresses a certain state of mind.
Definition of poetry based on term:
Poetry, literature that evokes a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience or a

specific emotional response through language chosen and arranged for its meaning, sound,
and rhythm.

TYPES OF POETRY
1. Haiku Poems
Haiku poems are three-line stanzas with a 5/7/5 syllable count. This form
of poetry also focuses on the beauty and simplicity found in nature.
2. Free Verse Poems

The genre of free verse poems is the least defined. In fact, they're
deliberately irregular, taking on an improvisational bent. There's no formula, no
pattern. Rather, the writer and reader must work together to set the speed,
intonation and emotional pull.
3. Cinquain Poems
A cinquain is a five-line poem inspired by Japanese haiku. There are many
different variations of cinquain including American cinquains, didactic cinquains,
reverse cinquains, butterfly cinquains, and crown cinquains.
4. Epic Poems
An epic is a long and narrative poem that normally tells a story about
a hero or an adventure. Epics can be presented as oral or written stories.
5. Ballad Poem
A ballad poem also tells a story, as epic poems do. However, ballad
poetry is often based on a legend or a folk tale. These poems may take the
form of songs, or they may contain a moral or a lesson.
6. Acrostic Poems
Also known as name poems, acrostic poems spell out names or words with
the first letter in each line. While the author is doing this, they're describing
someone or something they deem important.
7. Sonnet Poetry
Although William Shakespeare sensationalized sonnets, the
word sonetto is actually Italian for "a little sound or song." This form has
grabbed poets by the heart for centuries. It began as a 14-line poem written in
iambic pentameter. Although flourishes have been made over time, the general
principle remains the same.
How To Write A Poem
1. Use concrete imagery.
You should always try to describe something using the five senses:
• Smell,
• Taste,
• Touch,
• Sight, and
• Sound.
Using concrete imagery will immerse your reader in the world of your poem and make images
come alive for them.

2. Include literary devices.
Literary devices like metaphor and simile add

variety and depth to your poetry.
3. Write for the ear.
⇝ Poetry is made to be read out loud and you should write your poem
with a focus on how it sounds on the page. Writing for the ear will
allow you to play with the structure of your poem and your word
choice. Notice how each line of your poem flows into one another
and how placing one word next to another creates a certain sound

the word "glitter
4. Avoid cliche.

you avoid cliches, If you feel a
certain phrase or image will be too
familiar to your reader, replace it with
a more unique phrase.
For example, you may notice you have
used the cliche, "she was as busy as a bee"
to describe a person in your poem. You may
replace this cliche with a more unique
phrase, such as "her hands were always
occupied" or "she moved through the kitchen
at a frantic pace."
