Lab#9

The document describes how to use an oscilloscope to measure voltage, frequency, and time period of an electrical signal. It explains the basic components and functions of an oscilloscope including probes, function generators, and how to interpret displayed waveforms. The procedure outlines connecting the equipment and taking measurements of peak-to-peak voltage and calculating frequency using the oscilloscope's voltage and time divisions. The objective is to introduce how an oscilloscope can be used to analyze electrical signals.

To measure the magnitude of voltage,
time period, and frequency by
oscilloscope.
Objective
Introduction to Oscilloscope.
Measure the magnitude of voltage, frequency, and time period by
oscilloscope.
Equipment
 Digital Oscilloscope
 Probes
 Function Generator
Theory
• Oscilloscopes are used to observe the change of an electrical signal over time,
such that voltage and time describe a shape which is continuously graphed against
a calibrated scale. The observed waveform can be analyzed for such properties as
amplitude, frequency, rise time, time interval, distortion and others.
Types of oscilloscope
The main types of oscilloscopes are
• Analog Oscilloscopes
• Digital oscilloscopes

Function Generator: A function generator is usually a piece of electronic test
equipment used to generate different types of electrical waveforms over a wide
range of frequencies. Some of the most common waveforms produced by the
function generator are the sine, square, triangular and saw tooth shapes.

Procedure

Procedure to calculate the AC voltage using an oscilloscope:

 First of all, we will connect the positive terminal of the probe with the positive
terminal of the other probe, and the negative terminal is connected with the
negative terminal of the second probe.
 After that connect the other probe to the function generator.
 After that power on the function generator and select the sin wave and select the
frequency. The oscilloscope will show us an alternating signal on the display.
 Now with the help of the number of divisions, volts per division, and the times
per division we will become able to calculate the AC voltage with the help of an
oscilloscope.
Calculation
Calculating the AC voltage:
 Peek-to-peek voltage:
•Peek to peek divisions = divisions
•Volts per divisions = v
•AC voltage p-p =
•AC voltage p-p = v
 Frequency:
•Divisions per cycle =
•Time per division = ms
•T= Divisions per cycle * Time per division
•T=
•Now by using the frequency formula we get:
