1983 (aged 89).
• She was a short-story
writer, educator and editor.
• She authored the first
Filipino modern English
language story, Dead Stars .
BACKGROUND OF THE WORK

The story was the first story by a Filippino writer to be


written in English. It was published in 1925 in the “Philippine
Herald.” The story focuses on a man, Alfredo, who is engaged
to one woman but falls in love with another.
CHARACTERS OF THE STORY
• Alfredo Salazar
- A lawyer and a man who is afflicted with the love of two
women.
• Esperanza
- Wife of alfredo salazar. A woman of exquisite beauty,
charm and wit.
• Julia Salas
- Sister-in-law of judge Del valle. Other girl of alfredosalazar.
• Don Julian
- Father of Alfredo, a man of wisdom.
• Carmen
- Sister of Alfredo, a caring and compassionate woman .
• Judge Del Valle
- Brother-in-law of Julia and happened to be the salazar's
neighbour.
• Donna Adella
- Sister of Julia, a beautiful woman with chubby features.
Her husband is Dionisio.
• Calixta
- She is a friend of Esperanza.
• Brigida Samuy
- The woman Alfredo is sent to learn about as part of his
professional work.

 House of Don Julian- where Carmen was asking Don
